We are getting consistent dietary advice regarding prostate cancer from Snuffy Meyers, Mark Moyad, Mark Scholz, Dean Ornish, and the original work done by and for Michael Milliken. They do not speak of moderation of red meat (actually land animal meat), dairy, eggs, and processed or smoked meats. Rather, they eliminate them alltogether. Myers was the one that first showed the prostate cancer fuel 5-HETE is a hormone converted from land animal fat. He says to stay off it alltogether in all forms. The only moderation I have seen from him is a little parmesan chees on the occasional pizza. A recent study from the UK pointed to the increased risks of prostate cancer by ingesting 2 eggs a week.
When I first read all of this, my wife and I (with the knowledge and advice of our oncologist and my urologist) went to a once a month plan. Wwe identified all these items and developed a chart that would limit the item (ie beef) to one serving per month. We both lost weight and have more energy. Now our chart shows that we have these items only a few times a year, if at all. They have been replaced by more fish, seafood, vegetables, fruit, and grains. We have also significantly reduced the "white" foods like potatos, pasta, white rice, and bread. I have also continued my glass of red wine each evening for both the physical and mental health atributes. Thankfully I have never liked sweets and my idea of a great desert is a second glass of red wine!
My rad-onc, however, is in the moderation camp and sounds like David's oncologist. On his advice, every once in awhile, I get a very small but excellent steak. I have found that when I do have these items that I need only a few bites to be satisfied and there is no way I could eat a 6 ounce filet. But bring on a 8-10 ounce salmon filet and I am all over it.
Will this help? I think so and am encouraging my sons to pursue a similar approach. All of them eat very little meat to begin with, so I hope they are ahead of the curve.
