The doctor in Charleston was talking to me about
all my chronic pain issues. I told him that it didn't make sense that the worse of pains started long after the radiation ended, and especially after the by-pass surgery ended.
He said it made perfect sense. He asked me, "Let me guess, did the heavy pain start up about 6
I was amazed. I said it was exactly 6 months later in both cases, and since, the pain level and areas of pain have been increasing ever since.
He said that is what is known as the "placebo effect". He said that when the body goes through something very traumatic, like a major operation or radiation, or in my case both. I did have 9 surgeries in less than 4 years, plus the radiation.
He went on, saying that at first, the body reacts as if the problem has been fixed, and that at first you body thinks its fixed and better, so it triggers your mind to feel and believe that. But later, when the reality of whatever changes the surgeries or treatments did to your body catches up, then the real pain sets in place.
He said it was a very common mystery, and that he wasn't surprised how this placebo effect worked with me.
I had never heard or read of this effect before, but all I will say, is that it was very accurate in describing how things went with me.
It's amazing what one can pick up and learn from an experienced surgeon/doctor
