The "get it during
open enrollment through an employer" route is all I've seen. The trick is to get one that is automatically available to you when you leave that employer. AFLAC comes to mind as one that does that, or at least has in the past.
I went on a search when those earlier threads were posted, and found nothing commercially available at a manageable price. Fortunately I ignored all the folks a few years back that were saying whole-life was a waste, and that I should go term. I would be in a fix now.
