To Fairwind .....
Confusion of the meds - seems to go with the territory unfortunately. I'm a bit confused as I approach going on Xtandi ... but ... with Zytiga, I have some experience.
I was placed on Zytiga in late January - 2012 while in the hospital with a failing kidney ... an extension of the Prostate Cancer growth at the time. I was on Zytiga for 5-months, and during that timeframe, the Zytiga did not seem to do much for me. That is, no reduction of the PSA ... however, my extreme needs then was in my kidney (or kidneys) recovering thru two nefrostomy tubes (one each side) being placed by Interventional Radiology.
Now, a year later, the kidney situation is under control - with a right side nefrostomy tube and a left side internal stent between my kidney and bladder. But ... back to the Zytiga! I had no severe side effects with it, although in the last couple of months of using the med, my appetite started to get very bad ... and with a subtanstial weight loss.
My daily doses were 4 - Zytiga pills in the early morning along with 1 - 5mg Predisone ... and then late at night, 1 - more 5mg Predisone. My Oncologist took me off the Zytiga late last June because the PSA was slowly moving up. The other med I was on at the time was a Lupron injection every 6-months. I trust the results of any medication can vary dramatically from one person to another. I too, an 70 years old. This is the second time around for Prostate Cancer for me, after being nearly cancer free for about 6-years - until 2-years ago.
Hope the Zytiga works well for you.
