One possible advantage of a transperineal biopsy is that it comes at the prostate from a different angle and it will sometimes find tumors on the front side of the gland that a TRUS biopsy will miss again and again. But I kind of like the idea of a round of antibiotics next to look for an infection as the cause of your high PSA. If your urologist wants to do that first, I'd take his advice.
We all hate the waiting part. But it kind of comes with the package. But you have to be careful...
You said "If I have cancer, I want to find it and start treatment.
" There are lots of ways to skin a cat -- prostate cancer comes in many varieties, some worse than others, and treatments also come in a confusing welter of options. Some treatments that are perfectly sensible and appropriate for aggressive disease have side effects that are much worse than the symptoms of the less dangerous forms of cancer, even if left untreated. Men can and do hurt themselves rushing off in all directions. So "If I have cancer, I want to find it and start treatment,
" while perfectly understandable as a sentiment, leaves out a number of steps if you look at it as a plan
. To start with, you haven't been diagnosed. There's that. Then, if you are diagnosed, you will want to calm down, make a list of a boatload of doctors and go talk to all of them. Make sure you understand what sort of cancer you have before you commit, make sure you have had all the appropriate tests done to confirm the staging, and then
you can start to think about
treatment. And don't forget that the skill of the doctor treating you is important too.
But for now, try not to get too far ahead of yourself.
