I've been researching online to find what is a good cancer diet and good supplements to help fight tumor growth. There seems to be evidence that a low fat, plant based diet with lots of beans, legumes, whole grains is important, as well as sleep, stress management, and exercise. (His doctor has emphasized these also)

The diet is heart healthy also, which will benefit me as well since I have high cholesterol and hypertension.

Has anyone changed their diet to a low fat, plant based one? If so how do you eat enough calories to maintain your weight? My husband has lost the 15 extra pounds he's carried for years, but he is continuing to lose, and I'm concerned he will become too thin. He is still eating more fat (30+ %) than the diets recommend, and fish and occasionally some chicken or meat.

Also, so many sites recommend so many different supplements! He is taking green tea, Vit D, and Curcumin with meriva, Pom T, and a multi. Are there others that would be beneficial?

What is his height and weight? Other stats? Has he been treated for PCa?

As far as height and weight, it looks like he's pretty good to me. I've read to 'eat just enough to make it to the next meal'. I'm sure y'all will get used to him being thinner, but I'm 5'9 and exercise like crazy but weigh 182 (my high was 190). I'd like to be at 170 even.

And a year from now he'll probably be fully recovered and will put a few back on. I'd recommend he add weight lifting when he can as well.

Fwiw, I used to drink those protein shakes to gain weight so he might try a couple of those, between meals, per day.

This is a recording from a Dr. Lawenda that Tony C arranged. He's a MO and radiation guy, but talks about integrative oncology. He covers a lot of ground on diet and supplements. FWIW his recommendations are essentially the same as Myers, to adopt a Mediterranean diet and take the same supplements. Myers emphasized the diet is not low fat, and not vegan! It's good fat, white meat, fish etc. The audio starts to break up in the presentation but you'll be able to get through it ok. You just sign in, and it will run.

Dr Aaron Katz, mentioned in a post above, is my Urologist . When I asked the surgeon, Dr Tewari, what he thought about nutrition and supplements, he responded that I should discuss it with my URologist, Katz, who is, in Tewari's words, the "guru on the subject"

He's written a book, which you can find here...

As a G9, I have been researching this heavily since I lost my 0 last July. I have lost 30 lbs and now exercise regularly. I gave up read meat and dairy mostly. Sure, a good steak every now and again won't hurt. Heart healthy diet such as the Mediterranean is the general consensus. My research indicates that multi-vitamins are useless. Also Omega oils are very controversial. I can't force myself to eat fish, but the rest of the diet works for me. I have substituted Almond milk for dairy. Here is a list of my chosen supplements. Not sure if they do any good, but if I can avoid further treatment, it's worth it to me.

D3 2000iu
Pomegranate extract
Curcumin (Turmeric)
Zyflamend
Resveratol
CoQ10

My cholesterol and triglycerides were of concern to my Dr., but now they are all within normal range. Good luck.

thanks Rigby, i just spent my evening listing to dr lawenda. Very informative. My husband came in and heard the last half hour, and I think what he heard will help keep him motivated to stick with the healthy life plan I've given him.

PRatoman, thanks for book recommendation, i'll look at that too.

Startech, I haven't heard of the zyflamend. I'll look it up.

Dewayne, thanks for suggestions.

Hi Sophie, Just a thought about the supplements and whatever your husband may take - just be sure to take a list when you go for his next appointment.

Just by taking some action I know you must be feeling somewhat better. It gives you purpose and keeps your mind working toward a goal which we all need. Moving forward is talked about quite a bit here and for good reason - yes, there are times when you'll wish for all the world you could go back but its the moving forward that gets you somewhere. One day at a time is a real, valid, worthwhile way to move forward.

So, keep taking those deep breaths, put one foot in front of the other and you will be ok. And when you do have a bad day - go for it - because the next day is coming and you'll get back up again. It's ok.

Get yourself some sleep and take care, Sophie.

This is the list of supplements I take and the reason:

1) Jarrow Pomagrenate with CoQ10 (pom is shown to slow PSA doubling time)
2) Green Tea Extract (shown to inhibit tumor growth and antioxidant activity)
3) Vitamin D (no explanation, it's standard now)
4) Multi Vitamin ONLY from whole foods and NO FOLIC ACID (I have C677T mutation, I cannot process folic acid, if you have this mutation, folic acid will make your cancer worse as you lose on your DNA repair mechanism since it will be blocked by folic acid)
5) Tumeric Meriva
6) Cool Cayenne from SolarRay (shown to decrease PSA and cause prostate cancer aptosis)
7) Host Defense Immunity (a blend of 17 mushrooms, I used to only take Turkey Tail but I want the whole spectrum of mushrooms)
8) Vitamin K from Life Extension (shown to remove calcium from soft tissue and move them into bones)
9) Vitamin E Tocotrienol with Gamma form (the Gamma form kills prostate cancer stem cells, and Tocotrienol are more powerful than Tocopherols)
10) Vitamin C from all natural source (no absorbic acid form).
11) Fish Oil

I also add these to my blended smoothie everyday:
1) 1 cup antioxidant berry mix from costco
2) half of an organic lemon with skin
3) 1 teaspoon organic cocoa powder
4) 1 tablespoon of ground flax
5) 1 tablespoon of chia
6) 1 tablespoon of hemp seed
7) 1 tablespoon of Amazing Grass organic vegetable mix
8) 1 teaspoon of Indian Gooseberry (Amla powder)
9) 1 tablespoon of dried organic goji berry
10) 1 tablespoon of organic beet root powder

Every afternoon, I also drink a mix of macha tea + bitter melon juice.

Every dinner, I drink 1-2 glasses of alcahol-free wine: Ariel Cabernet Sauvignon for the resveratrol in natural form.

Everyday lunch is a huge salad consisting of:
1) Mixed spinach, kale, chard, purple cabbage
2) Chopped Onion
3) Chopped Garlic
4) Chopped Green peppers
5) Sprouted Brocolli
6) Chopped Reddish
7) Walnuts
8) Soaked Raw Almonds
9) Pumpkin Seeds
10) Saurkraut or sometimes Artichoke quarters
11) Dressing is extra virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar
12) Spices include: Tumeric, black pepper, Bragg's 27 spice mix, Curry, Cumin, Oregano

Every week I make sure to eat:
at least 5 cooked tomatoes for the lycopene
at least 10 cups of brocolli/califlower
at least 5 cups of carrots
Other vegetables sometimes I eat: peas/eggplants/string beans/cabbage/bitter melon

Cooking usually involves curry, ginger, garlic, onion, leek

The source of carbs is from: Quinoa/Squash/Brown Rice/Wild rice, occasionally Dave's bread

The source of fat is mostly from: coconut oil and avocados/guacamole

The source of protein is from: Mostly Garbanzo Beans/Lentils. Sometimes black beans or soy.

I only drink soy milk that we make ourselves, also prefer fermented form like Natto or Tempeh.

The only diary product allowed is: Organic Grassfed Ghee, which should only be consumed during winter and never in spring. Ghee has no protein, only fat, and grassfed milk fat is anti-cancer, it's the protein that's pro-cancer.

As for fruits: I make sure to eat either 1 Organic Red Delicious each day, or 1 Kiwi (which is one of the best fruit for DNA repair)

For meat: it is steamed wild caught salmon, or fresh crab meat from costco (25 dollars for 1 lbs, which lasts me like 5 meals, and crab is a good source of selenium).

I eat red meat average 5 OZ every 2 weeks, only grassfed sources.

I avoid ALL eggs/poultry products as their choline content makes Prostate cancer more aggressive and make the progression faster.

Do i believe any of this helps? Who knows - I just think they can't hurt :) Maybe it's more of a mental thing - it makes me feel like I am in control so maybe it's all just an illusion.

This is how the supplement industry reached $23 billion in sales last year.

I don't know if this stuff has any validity, even the Drs that believe in it say there are no large scale studies proving it. Maybe it does though.

The one thing I do know, and it's anecdotal, is that a friend of mine, was diagnosed with G9 12 years ago. Had open RP, which showed it had escaped the capsule. He did some reading and changed his diet also, put himself on a daily regimen of vitamins and supplements that supposedly could help. At time of diagnosis he was given a very poor 2 year outlook (this was a long time, l imagine treatment options were less plentiful) .

He had no post RP treatment, and had no PSA rise until last year.
So maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. There are success stories though, maybe just luck, maybe not.

Three best sources I can refer:

Fighting Prostate Cancer with Diet and Hormone Therapy by Charles "Snuffy Myers, M.D.

ABC's of Nutrition and Supplements for Prostate Cancer by Mark Moyad, M.D.

www.ornishspectrum.com Intensive Lifestyle Changers May Affect the Progression of Prostate Cancer by Dean Ornish, M.D.

These writings are from proven evidence-based scientists/doctors and are valid and reliable sources.

FWIW, scroll down to pg 24 on the PDF counter to "Serum Markers Variation Consistent with Autoschizis Induced
by Ascorbic Acid–Menadione in Patients with Prostate Cancer"
www.euro-med.us/dr-lasalvia-publications.pdf

Also, there is this:
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2288789/
Interesting at least. May amount to nothing. But I got an over the counter version of the vitamin mix Vitamin C/Vitamin K3 in a 100/1 ratio as used in these studies, called ProsStay. Maybe just coincidence but my PSA dropped 26% during the 2 months between diagnosis and surgery. It had never gone down before, and had just recently increased about 21% in 3 weeks!

These are very small studies and probably don't meet the standards of the big studies. So that might all be coincidence or worthless, but I continue to take this combo for a week or 2 every few months. I have considered instead taking it at a much lower dosage daily.

Many of the large research hospitals staff doctors and researchers that specifically focus in nutrition for cancer patients.

Winship in ATL has one and I'm meeting with him in January when I'm on the other side of Brachy treatment.

First I've heard about poultry though. Dang. I can do without eggs but I don't know what I'll eat if chicken and turkey are bad.

The egg thing has been difficult for me. In fact I had 2 this morning, 1st in several weeks. I used to have 2 a day at least 2 or 3 days a week. But from what I understand about the chicken, it is strictly poultry with skin. Skinless has no negative effect. However, the same studies that showed that showed about zero neg effect for red meat, even if processed. BTW, these studies were just related to recurrence, not to getting it in the 1st place. Though it's hard to imagine that it would not be a negative in both cases.
