about 2 months ago I noticed a funny feeling in the back of my mouth occassionally. I went to a mirror and saw a very strange site. Under my farthest back tooth on the bottom was exposed bone. It was somewhat under where my wisdom tooth was (decades ago they were removed). I do recall some inflammation on that side a few months ago as well.
All this had me very concerned because I was on xgeva monthly for a year and then every 6 months for 2 years or so...Osteochronosis of the Jaw (ONJ) is a rare side effect of xgeva...the same side effect as Fosanox and other drugs that mess with bone turnover. My last xgeva shot was in May and I was due. We all agreed to not get the shot any time soon...
I went to my dentist as soon as I could and the first thing the hygienist said was, "...that looks interesting...". I could tell she hadn't seen too many of those and her words weren't too comforting.
The dentist thought it was trauma to a "tori" bone...a word I didn't know what it meant...Apparently, lots of people have these extra bones in their mouth..(I eat a lot if hard food, nuts/veggies/etc... he said it would probably heal, but he was concerned about my history of pc and xgeva. I was scheduled to have my teeth cleaned in 2 weeks so he said we'd check it again in 2 weeks.
In 2 weeks nothing changed and my dentist referred me to a periodontal ist. Got in early with him and he put me on an antibiotic and some special mouthwash. He said that if I wasn't on the xgeva, he would treat differently....follow up in 2 weeks.
2 weeks took me to today...got in the dentist chair..doc picked at it for like 15 seconds, caused a little pain and then he told the nurse he needed some type of pliers...not what you want to hear in a dentist chair...but then all of a sudden the "dead bone" fell off (small, thin piece). Then I asked the $100,000 question...did new tissue grow there? He said oh yeah...healing real good!!! wife says it looks like nothing ever happened...I am so excited!!!! Doc says no more antibiotic but to stay on mouthwash for another 2 weeks at which time he wants a follow-up. Hope it continues to heal...so far I'm "Healing Well"...
Just thought I'd share some great news today and provide some info for anyone with this unique situation.
