I was in the hospital 4 days, which had nurses dealing with the first days. At home, I had family from out of state for a couple of days. Could I have done those days alone? Maybe, if I lived in a one story apt., but I don't. Getting up / down the stairs was a 20 minute expedition.
Where being totally alone would be an issue -
Driving - You may be advised not to / prevented from driving. I was blocked for a little over three weeks, then really couldn't. First excursion was dinner at friends. Twenty miles, forty-five minutes to do. Luckily I had friends at the office who made some grocery store trips for me, and took me to get the cath out. A cab would have worked.
General mindset - I needed someone to vent to when I wet the bed, bled all over the place, and just generally couldn't deal. I had some neighbors who helped me during that time.
