I went through this a little over a year ago. I was happy with my MO doing it, but I was a little more open-minded about trying to reduce the quantities of opioids I take. He hooked me up with a pain specialist aligned with a great research university, but that guy and I just did not hit it off. Then when I had trouble, it was awkward getting everybody on the same page about what was going on. In the end, I dropped the pain specialist and convinced the MO to remain in charge. It is certainly more convenient seeing just the one guy, and he is perfectly capable of handling my needs. The specialist really didn't have anything more to offer. I have settled into staying on the level of morphine that the MO likes and I am indeed doing great with respect to pain. So good, that sometimes I still imagine cutting back on the daily pain meds (hoping to reduce the constipation and mental side effects), but I no longer push the issue.
