We've all seen them. License plates that make a statement about cancer and the fight against it. In the form of a usually colorfully designed license plate on the back of the car in front of us.

They are attention-getting certainly, and do serve to spread the word about cancer and its research and treatment.

I regularly see them when driving on the streets here in my own town, in fact almost daily if I look for them.

And I have to observe that the breast cancer camp has again taken a significant lead here, as they do in so many areas, with pink ribbon designs and such, in dominating the number of plates on the road with a cancer theme. And that's certainly confirmed if you google a phrase such as

cancer license plates

Some examples of cancer-themed license plates that one may see out on the road nowadays:

And you can even get license plate support frames if you'd like:

So to the thread question: is a cancer-themed license plate something you would want on your own car? In our case, examples with a PCa theme might be

PROST8
LESS1PROS
IBEATPC
etc.

(And if you suddenly think of some other ingenious PCa-related possibilities in addition to the above three-off-the-top-of-my-head, by all means post them below, just for fun).

Assuming such candidates meet the rules of one's state DMV. That usually just means nothing obscene or bigoted, and limited to a certain number of characters. But normally it's unlimited as to what one would like to have made and put on the back of one's car.

Here in my own state of Florida it's pretty easy to get one. (They're technically called "specialty license plates" but popularly called "vanity plates"). They currently run $ 15 annually in addition to the usual registration fees. And of course you can design your own, including one with a PCa-theme. (Maybe it’s time one of us did that). Here, just for example purposes, are the rules for such plates in Florida:

and some examples of such "vanity plates" now popular in Florida:

So getting back to the original question then, do you think you would want one for your own car?

Personally, I think I would pass, but if you feel differently, why not say so and tell us why? And, specifically, what kind of plate, presumably PCa-themed, would you design for your own car?

Just for fun.

I would have to say I would take a pass on the plates. This being because I never ever got the thing of personalized plates in the 1st place. That being said i will talk to almost anyone about my PC and the struggles we all go through.

Zero interest. There are so many vanity plates on the street, I don’t think it would accomplish anything. I think there are much better ways to bring awareness.
Do a fundraiser
Run a race
Start a foundation (it’s not hard, and especially using social media it’s not hard to do it well.)
Talk to people you know.

I don’t think license plates do anything except make it about the driver of the car they’re on.
JMHO. But an interesting question, I’ll be curious to see others responses.

I too would have 'zero' interest in such a plate, but I'll readily concur with your observation about the breast cancer campaign! In fact, as my own daughter-in-law recently pointed out, you'll see ten-times more advertising for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cervical cancer than you're likely to see for prostate cancer. In terms of public awareness to it, it seems almost a well-kept secret.

In South Dakota you can get an organizational license plate that has room to put a sticker between the first letter and the rest of the numbers. Popular are firefighter, military, college or pro team mascots, or a pink cancer ribbon or the blue PC ribbon could be used.

I know a couple of men at work that got prostate cancer and kept it to themselves. They kept their secret for awhile but people found out. As for me I came in and told management that I had prostate cancer and needed a couple of days off. Was told I could have the time off but would get written up for not giving two weeks notice for needing time off. This clown got his ass chewed out by bigger fish.

If I can get one person to get tested and avoid catching this crap late rather than early, then my getting pc is a positive, and I deal in positives.

So bring on the plates. Have a great weekend guys.

Absolutely not!! It would detract from my Green Bay Packers Owner license plate holder.

Or any other form of cancer for that matter. We've had pink thrown at us at every turn. Even my wife, a lymphoma survivor is sick of people assuming she had breast cancer. 81GG I've seen a few of the Moffitt plates here in Tampa bay, which is appropriately understated and a suitable statement about cancer research and treatment in general. I feel that is far more appropriate than pasting pink ribbons everywhere. There's even a "pink plumber" that advertises here, touting that they donate part of your charges to BC.

Reading over the replies here it appears that the answer is a resounding NO, and I agree. I wouldn't want to advertise that I've been sick. But I do have a stock "endless summer" plate on my car, one of the options available here in Fla. It's probably the closest I'll ever again get to a surfboard.

You're right, RobLee, the posting consensus on this thread, as to having a cancer-themed plate on one's car or not, has indeed been a resounding "no." I even declined myself in my OP.

And it's understandable that people feel that way. For one thing, there are other ways, and arguably more effective ones, of getting out the word about PCa. People here can on their own see about pursuing those other ways, if they wish.

Maybe it's all a matter of personal perspective, as well, as to how meaningful it is. For instance, I have this on the back of my Chevy Malibu:

But that's because I worked at UF for 35 years, as well as being an alumnus of the place. So it just seemed to make sense to me to have such a plate on my car.

But having a cancer plate? Yes, I can understand ambivalence about that.

(But here's the Moffitt Center plate that RobLee mentions, BTW, available on the Florida DMV website. I CAN see putting that one on a car):

Prostate cancer is unique. Go to just about ANY other cancer support site with that question and you will receive an overwhelming “yes,” rather the sit-on-my-hands “no.”

Prostate cancer has a bad reputation. Who wants to advertise as they drive around town “Hey everyone! I can’t hold my pee! I can’t get a boner! And all this because I was probably one of the million-plus men over treated for prostate cancer!”

Get real.

But go to just about any other cancer site...

For some people (men and women)...cancer is the most interesting thing that has ever happened to them. So they wear tee shirts, join groups, get bumper stickers and get cancer license plates. If it makes you feel better...do it.

In my state the "vanity" plates are horribly expensive. We had talked about this in the past. I looked it all up, and at over $500 extra for a three year plate, I can't afford it.
