Didn't always agree with. Always had respect for him.

Can you imagine 100 senators like McCain in the Senate today? All focused on country over matters?

as a fellow Navy Vietnam vet, I respect the man fully. 5 1/2 years in the Hanoi Hilton would break the best of them

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Because this forum is apolitical, my tribute to John McCain is the tremendous courage he showed by enduring his brutalizing imprisonment as a POW.

What James Stockdale, another POW, said applies also to John McCain:

"I never lost faith in the end of the story, I never doubted not only that I would get out, but also that I would prevail in the end and turn the experience into the defining event of my life, which, in retrospect, I would not trade.

"This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end—which you can never afford to lose—with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be."

Tran Trong Duyet, the commandant of the Hoa Lo POW camp in Hanoi where McCain was held, claimed in 2008 that no prisoners were ever tortured. They were inhumanly tortured, and are heroes, no matter what anyone says, in public or in private, to the contrary.

Rest in Peace, John McCain

Served his country with more integrity than most. Though I disagreed with many of his positions, I never doubted for a second he loved this country.

Thank you for your service and rest in peace.

Memorable moment in history, browntrout.

I will never forget the “no, ma’am” moment which showed the strength of his true character. Without hesitation he said “no thank you” to the door held open (NO POLITICS - comment removed)
His post-diagnosis speech on the Senate floor last summer was also a memorable moment in history…rebuking both sides for failure to follow “regular order.” “We’re getting nothing done,” he exclaimed. Not afraid to say the king has no clothes; truth to power.

I didn’t agree with many of his policy positions, yet I find myself wishing we had more like him.
