Noted, Jim. Medicinal here.
I avoid being stoned or drunk as "our ancestors warned us not to take things into our body that would make us weak or stupid." My desire is to function 'normally'. My idea of a party is Friday dinner at home with my wife and my Labrador followed with a couple of episodes of Shaun the Sheep, OR a long visit with our son and his intended.
As to long term health implications, those studies have been done with folks who smoked
cannabis from 'street' sources. (Inhaling smoke from burning vegetable matter is unhealthy and 'street' sources may well be contaminated with many bad things) A California study found that actually lowered head, neck and lung cancer rates, but increased COPD risk. There have not been any serious studies done yet on long term side effects with eaten or vaped cannabis.
However, cannabis has been used for about
13,000 years for medicinal purposes so there is a record. It was used as an anesthetic for dental work and trepanning in antique times. When folks would have severe headaches for a long period of time, they would sometimes go to the Shaman for relief. Sometimes they would get medication, sometimes they would be trepanned. After consuming (a substantial amount of) cannabis from the Shaman's medicine supply, he would then carefully drill a hole into the persons skull with clean stone tools. If there was extreme pressure in the brain pan cavity, say from a brain tumour, this would release that pressure and stop/lesson the headache. From the substantial number of skulls we have found from folks who had this procedure and lived (the holes were partially healed over with new bone, which takes quite some time), it was effective and likely helped the patients lead a more normal life.
No person has ever died from cannabis consumption "estimates say that a smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within 15 minutes to induce a lethal response” One study found that the THC extracted from 45.5 pounds of cannabis can kill a lab mouse. (would have been easier to just drop the cannabis on the rodent). If one overconsumes cannabis, it flips on your 'fight or flight' mechanism full blast and you 'pull a whitey' (in the vernacular) or get very frightened. This sends many amateur users to the ER. Moderation, again, is the key here.
I am in Michigan, Logo, near Detroit, 20 minutes from Ontario, Canada. I take a shot at body surfing Lake Superior every fall, if the waves are decent for that.
Otherwise, I just enjoy the 56* swim after an all-day hike. 2 weeks back we hit -20*F here, so much of my outdoor time is 'dancing in the 10 below'. I love the Great White North like you love the sunny sands.
