Yes,
The transfer portal and NIL are shaking the college scene up. Between the portal and guys going to the pros early, coaches can't count on anything from year to year.

Mattam,
That and the competition for the open roster spots has me a bit concerned for KSU.
We aren't a cream of the crop team, and I'm worried they will all get snatched up very quickly.

The Royals are tied for the second worst record in MLB.
Thank you Cincinnati!

No, no, no, no!!!
Sports is nothing but a mindless distraction. It is nothing, if the world collapsed we would do well without it.

But I was thinking, If I were Musk rich,
I would buy the KC Royals and then pull a Steinbrenner. (sp)
I wouldn't care if the team lost money, it wouldn't, but if it did, I wouldn't care.
Meaning I would spare no expense in getting and keeping the absolute best players.
Being a small market team, KC can't keep them.
We have Greinke (sp) back, but it's near the end of his career.
We have lost so many All Stars, it's freaking ridiculous!

Well, you just about would need Musk money these days. The absolutely obscene salaries turn me off so much I barely keep up with MLB. Plus, the analytics driven game is just about unrecognizable from what I remember. NFL is getting just as bad.

I guess I don't want to change with the times. College sports has been my refuge, but it's getting ridiculous too.

It's all becoming a lot of nothing.

Since retiring I have taken an interest in auto racing.

Mattam,
I agree, their salaries are obscene.
I gave up NBA, I'll watch the Chiefs, but no other team, and I just follow the Royals, I don't listen to games anymore.

KSU bball lost our best player to Miami, I think!
He apparently was promised more NIL money than any other player on that team.

I loved when the Olympic athletes were all amateur, and all amateur sports were not about money.
Maybe they were to an extent, but you could still watch your team on local TV.

You have not been there until you have been a Minnesota sports fan. You don’t know how it is going to happen but you know it will happen.

Baseball is certainly not about NOTHING, it all about money. Loved watching when the players were on steroids. We went to many games and watched Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling cut down the top users. My wife and I were at the first World Series game between NY and AZ in Phoenix after 9/11. Snipers on the roofs around the stadium, helicopters and jets overhead added to the excitement. AZ Traded away Randy and Curt and started selling deposit bottles to pay for and attract new players. Stopped watching when the owner decided to stay with basically the same starting losing line up for years. Now it is NFL and college sports, but my true love is car racing. Netflix got me addicted to F1. We have been to Daytona for stock cars and also watched many Indycar races. My wife and I also watch the Tour De France every year. No more baseball for me. I got NOTHING for playing the GAME and today’s babies can’t even finish a game because of a blister. There are no more Ironmen left in the game.

Jack,
The greatest and most epic sporting event in the world -- three weeks of the Tour de France. Perfect for breaking up hot Tucson summers. Because of the time zones, I record each stage and wait until it's finished later in the morning. That way I don't miss any of the action and I can fast forward the commercials.

It's my favorite time of the year. The punishment those guys tolerate, especially climbing the mountains, is amazing. Then, the mountain descents are so hair-raising I can barely watch.

Glad to hear you enjoy it too.

Mumbo, I have Cal Ripkins Jr’s autograph jersey from his last all-star game. He certainly had B#### of steel.
Matt, I have to video tape the tour as well because I need my beauty sleep. LOL. The tour athletes have to endure the greatest hardships on their bodies of any sport IMO. They certainly are the most physically fit of any sport. Yes, the best sport to watch in those back to back to back 100 degree days with a cold drink and air conditioning blowing full blast. My best to you both,
Jack

I know Tim G also likes the TDF. I see he hasn't logged on since November of last year. I hope he's okay.

I was in contact with Tim a couple of days ago, he is doing fine, just a bit preoccupied for the moment

I'm watching Nadal at the French open. His rituals are fascinating. He says that he doesn't even "fully understand them." I love the guy's grit and will miss his play style when he retires.

He better get moving -- way down in the 1st set.

Not much into tennis or cycling, but I certainly admire their abilities, strength, and endurance.

On a side note: KC Royals now have the WORST record in the MLB.
I'm still going to the Prostate Cancer Awareness game June 12th with my kids. We play Baltimore, so maybe we can pull one off.

Have been watching the NBA finals (Boston vs. Golden State) and watching Game 2 right now (Sunday evening, 6/5), in my easy chair in front of the tube, typing away on my laptop, as I watch the game. (Wow, great shot, Horford!)

In the NBA it's always puzzled me that those guys, masters of the roundball that they are, can go out on the court and sink gobs of three-point shots, lots of them definitely from "downtown."

But when they go to the line to shoot free-throws, they regularly miss some! How is that? I mean, they're standing alone on the free-throw line, no opposing player is in their face, no shot clock pressuring them to shoot, it's a relatively short shot, and --- they regularly miss some!

I actually googled

why cant nba players make free throws

and found this:

https://hoopshype.com/2015/08/03/why-cant-nba-players-make-free-throws/#:~:text=why%20can%27t%20nba%20players%20make%20free%20throws%3f%201,a%20maximum%20of%20...%203%20mental%20approach.%20

It's by an NBA shooting coach who claims the problem is --- confidence. That's all.

He says

"Think about it. If a player steps to the line questioning himself, feeling all the eyes of the crowd on him, and genuinely feeling uncomfortable, there is no way he is going to succeed. But if the player steps to the line with the mindset ‘automatic points’ and feeling comfortable and relaxed then he will have a much better chance of making those free throws. Literally, free throw shooting is between 80-90 percent mental. Simple as that."

Well maybe he's right. Confidence really is the key.

(BTW, the above article has some really interesting figures on how some of the truly great NBA players in history -- legends -- had terrible (by today's standards) free-throw figures during their careers!).

Well, those guys are pros, so l'm sure they know what they're doing. But, still, it just seems a little odd that making free throws turns out to be the challenge for those guys that it is.

Confidence is everything!
I played little kid ball over 50 years ago for two years.
First year, Sw Bell sponsor, we were 9-3, we had some really good players.
Second year, Elkins Pharmacy, we went 3-9, we had exactly 2 good players (I wasn't one of them). We had very little confidence, but we did beat each of the other 3 teams in our little conf/league 1 time each. Including the eventual city champion. They went undefeated except for one lone loss to the leagues worst team, my team.

Keep up, I'm trying to find something good about the Royals play this year.
Elkins Pharmacy's winning rate was 0.250
Royals currently are 0.321
So the Royals are at least beast better than the 1970 Elkin's Pharmacy team.
Keep it up Royals, overcome your current station in MLB.

The Royals are still near the bottom as of today, 6/24/22.
But hey, they are only 12 1/2 games back of the Indians. Stop it, I refuse to use that politically correct name. I'm so tired of PCorrectness/wokeness.

Now to MY KSU Wildcats:
New bball coach Lang now has 10 players. The fellas can scrimmage now. I am very excited for the upcoming season, we have got to be better this year!! Not bad recruiting considering we had all but two young men jump ship upon his hiring.

Now, our football team has garnered some truly very good commitments! Even a 4-star QB. The news folk are really high on this coming team, some are saying 9 maybe 10 wins this season.

My heart is aglow with my Cats possibilities for the upcoming seasons!!

When I was a kid, well I'm still a kid if you count my immaturity, I lived there block's from Yankee stadium and could hear the crowd yelling when there was a home run.
A rabid fan I'd go often and sit in the bleachers for 75 cent's or general admission at a buck fifty (since the strikes I've given up on baseball with the ridiculous prices etc)
I used to believe the players were all from the state they lived in but realized Mickey Mantle was from Oklahoma and it dawned on me. I felt as bad as I felt when my brothers told me wrestling was fake!
When Steinbrenner bought a championship team I was at first happy but eventually I felt like we were stealing.
Anyway All I watch now is football and sometimes ice hockey but only the cup series. Oh yeah and March madness.
