The great French artiste Edith Piaf had something to say about nothing:

Andrew -

A great poem about nothing deserves a great critical review:

not anything, no thing, nonexistence, inexistence, nonbeing, nullity, nihility, oblivion, nonentity, emptiness.

So many words to describe that which is a figment of our imagination. There are many more examples which, I think, just emphasizes our frustration for comprehending nothing.

The weakest description is probably "nothingness," which I'd say, by definition, is something.

The chicken/egg puzzle is much easier. Almost certainly the egg preceded the chicken. 😮

Unless the first chicken's mother did not lay eggs but maybe they were live and ready to rock n roll upon birth.

Most mammals do it, some species of sharks do it, seahorses do it (I think), ...etc

aleph, however, mammals do it (live births) differently from sharks and seahorses. Sharks are ovoviviparous--they carry the maturing eggs within their bodies and they 'hatch' and are pushed out through the skin, rather than maturing in a uterus. Even weirder, as I recall, it is the seahorse males that carry the fertilized eggs around.

I am not a biologist.

Sharks: daaaannnng, seems like that would kill the parent.
Male seahorses and male Emperor Penguins, the most whipped males in the animal kingdom, unless you count some male spiders who get eaten right after the one night stand.

And this is one reason I chose mathematics and computer science as my life, more CS than math the last 25 years or so.

I went on to Amazon and ordered a chicken and an egg.

I'll let you know which comes first ...

But, Andrew, when Amazon gets its drone delivery service up (literally) and running (see below), and one drone takes off with the egg, and heads for your place, and then another drone carrying the chicken also takes off and heads for your place, and they both wind up getting there and landing in your yard at the very same instant, well, the same old question comes up all over again!

provided the drone accurately compensates for the difference in weight and aerodynamics between a chicken and an egg ...

What if the delivery arrives with the hen incubating the egg? Back to square one.

If no one is home to see it when the Amazon drones arrive with the chicken and the egg did neither one come first? Or did they both come first?

garyi,

I used to have a neighbor that pitched minor league ball back in the late 40s and early 50s and he claims he pitched to Mickey Mantle or was it Roger Maris. Probably Maris as Maris was from the central part (ND) of the country.
I think he said he actually struck him out, but my Lupron memory won't swear to it.
Unfortunately records on those teams are hard to come by. Teams played in western Missouri and eastern Kansas
