I don't believe a thing our media says about China. I think they handled the pandemic quite well. I note their economy will soon surpass ours. Next time you go into a store - after you're vaccinated - take a look at where a great many of the products are made. If you guessed China, you'd win a prize.

Noticing a lot less made in China stuff recently...could just be my experience

If you get a chance, visit China, outside of the major cities, you'll be amazed (and maybe not in a good way). Or invest in one of their companies...my experiences have been all very poor.

Same with Russia - a friend of mine is married to a first generation Russian, when they went to visit - he couldn't believe farmers using oxen to plough the fields...where he was...

Prato, the way Collier County is doing it is similar to some other counties in Florida. They are using an on-line reservation system called eventbrite. It's just like buying tickets for a concert or sporting event and when a day is full it simply says "sold out". Much better than waiting overnight for a first-come-first-served model.

Eventbright works well, we use it for NJ Audubon scheduled walks

Palm beach county is using phone (as I said, overwhelmed) and email. The Eventbrite idea seems like a good one.
I just saw on the cbs evening news, a clip from a vaccination site in Ft Lauderdale. 100,000 phone requests and 30,000 emails requesting appointments. They are already booking into February. So I’m not optimistic about getting it before I go back to NY. BUT .... the 55 and over community I live in is working on getting an on-site vaccination program done here, which would be awesome. I know one community that is already getting it, about 10 miles from here, and others that have already set the wheels in motion like we did. So keeping fingers crossed.

Yes, it is just your experience. Go to any store, see where things are made, report back, and if much of it isn't made in China I will eat my hat on a live stream you can post here.

As far as your anecdotes about China, and Russia - facts outweigh them.

I suggest you take a virtual tour of the USA - born in the USA! born in the USA! - and see what a s-hole we've become, before sullying other countries you know nothing about.

My sister read this today. Her husband has very aggressive Stage IV prostate cancer.

Her words to me, "Living in that kind of fear isn't something we choose to do."

Since this has wandered into China stuff....here's MY experience: The company I work for provides industrial instrumentation worldwide, and China is a HUGE market. We have direct evidence of intellectual property theft in China: not long ago, an email came from a customer in China who had a "warranty issue" with a new device. Our attempts to correct the issue from the US did not resolve the problem. When we finally got them to ship it back to us for in depth troubleshooting, it was obvious they had not only completely dismantled it (it was assembled with screws we never use), we found solder joints all over the mother board that indicated that components had been removed and re-soldered (badly), and wired connections that were done with different colored wires and in incorrect sockets.

In short, they had taken the thing apart to find out all the details, reassembled it incorrectly, and then demanded a warranty repair. And this is incredibly common in China. It's called theft of intellectual property, and there is no recourse.

I could go on. They are not to be trusted. When we get a PO from China, we do not ship until there is 100% prepay of the invoice. No money, no material leaves our dock.

Americans blame China for what we did to ourselves. It's sickening, and hypocritical. Long live China!!

Buddy, I'm tired of this. China is not our ally, not our friend. Yes, they've been around a long time, and there is much to admire and value in their history. They are not honorable, they are not trustworthy.

I travel to China 3 to 4 times a year (fortune 20 company) and have been all over the USA
Good and bad in both places...we started sourcing components from other countries last few years simply because Chinese quality was deteriorating. No reason to replace something in a year or two when we can get other manufacturers to produce high quality stuff.
Interestingly, the components we get from France are only 12% more expensive and have been lasting a lot longer. A big win in the long run.
Enjoy life - perhaps relax the assumptions about things you don't know about

LOL you guys and your China fixation.

Take a look at high speed rail: China has more than the entire world combined. And, they made it themselves. I'm talking maglev.

They've just landed on the Moon (again), and will have a base there soon to mine helium-3. Know what that is fuel for? Fusion energy. Limitless energy.

I can go on about their development, but let's just look at this comment: "Not only 5G, there is a lot of technology breakthrough in China this month. The Chang'e-5 successfully take samples from the moon and now returning to Earth, a new Quantum Computer that make China achieved quantum supremacy, a 'artificial sun' nuclear fusion reactor has just powered up, China Deep Sea manned submersible break human diving record, and more... It will expect more to come next year."

All of that, and more, is true.

GG you don't know me, or my experiences, don't make assumptions about me, or them.

If you're tired of it don't read it. Easy.

They are our friends, and have been our allies in the past. They are trustworthy.

Hal, Thank God we are not China. I lived there for several years and any of you that believe what they report are fools. Incidence there is at least 10 times what they have reported. And remember when they threw out the reporters from the NYT, WaPo and WSJ last spring when they were in Wuhan?

And, to all: I'm not the one who brought up China. It was JNF, above. In doing so, he called anyone who believe what is reported from China fools. No action from our moderators - that was allowed to fly. This is the same Jack who said Covid would be over in 30 days.

If I ran a country, I'd toss out the NYT, the Washington Post, and what many call the Wall St. Urinal too. They're all fake news.

This thread was about vaccination, and that's fine. Our resident comedian said some folks should die. After that is started going downhill...

China has the largest high-speed railway in the world, with 22,200 miles of track and most major cities covered by the network. They will have 43,000 miles of HSR by 2035. China accounts for 2/3 of the world's high-speed rail (HSR).

"Shanghai Maglev trains are currently the fastest trains commercially operated in the world, with a top commercial speed of 431 kph (268 mph) and a top non-commercial speed of 501 kph (311 mph)."

The U.S. has no HSR. Our fastest train, the Acela, can reach 150 mph for a paltry 34 miles of its 457-mile span. We have zero miles of high-speed rail, in addition to collapsing rail infrastructure. This is not to speak to our collapsing roads, water management systems, waterways, drinking-water systems and wastewater systems, schools, hospitals, bridges, airports, etc. Infrastructure, as Abe Lincoln, and Alexander Hamilton, knew, is vital for a strong industrial economy. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gave our infrastructure a D+ in 2017, in their report card; see https://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/. This collapse, of our physical economy, has happened over decades. No one did it to us. No country attacked us. We did it to ourselves. We have no one to blame but ourselves. It's a national disgrace, much like giving our suffering people $600 dollars, while handing out billions to other countries.

Enough talk about China. This thread is about vaccinations , an important issue to all of us. So I don’t want to lock it, until we’ve given it every chance to get back on track. So keep it on topic from here on.
Thanks.

Bottom line: when I am eligible for the vaccine, I'm going to get it. It disturbs me deeply how many people out there are going to refuse to get it for whatever reasons they give. Denial is a powerful force, and logic, and facts, and so on do nothing to abate it. Unfortunately, the only thing that really can break denial is reality. And reality sucks.

Well said Hal, I’m with you all the way on that. I can’t get the vaccine fast enough. Seems like it will be a while though, until the kinks are straightened out.
I’m guessing that by mid February, things will start to look different, with the surge from the holidays peaking , and vaccine production and Administration ramping up. Let’s all hold our collective breaths.

My immunocompromised wife advised me that her doctor indicated that I might get the vaccine at the same time as her since we live together. I suspect that there is no end to this daisy chain of who goes next. I would be happy to wait until it makes sense for me to go ahead of someone. So long as I do what I have been doing, living like a retired hermit crab who goes for daily walks, my risk seems small compared to those in nursing homes or working in hospitals.

I do think I should go ahead of Pratoman though. Moderators go last, like captains on a ship.

Since this is the virus thread of the week here is an interesting tidbit.

Using your fav search engine type in

“flu season non existent” and click on the news results. Sit back and enjoy some good news.

Seasonal flu is nowhere in North America, yet covid is prevalent. There are tons of news stories. It happened in south america as well.

So a couple of possibilities/observations here:

1) It seems that there is enough mask wearing to effectively eliminate influenza.

2) If you believe #1 then Covid is more transmissible compared to the flu

3) People with the flu are assuming its Covid?

4) There are many who believe that the diagnosis of Covid is used instead of the flu for various purposes (financial/billing, political)

Regardless....however they collect that data, influenza is nowhere this winter.

another conspiracy theory. tell us about sweden again dude.

btw, i normally get sick at least six times a year but this year not a single time. the reason is pretty obvious to me: masks and social distancing work
