Stephen, pure and simple...we want people to get the vaccine because we want the pandemic to end. Reaching herd immunity through the vaccine is the vehicle for that to happen. Re comparisons to the flu, I think that ship has long since sailed with 500,000+ deaths
If the number of anti Vaxxers remains large enough, there will always be deaths from Covid, and it will never go away (it may never go away anyway, but we don’t know that and we want to give it every chance to do so).
They make their choice, but what happens when they expose one of our grandchildren, or one who got a weak immune response from the vaccine (95% effectiveness, not 100%), people who have no choice.
I guess time will tell how long the immunity the shots we are all scrambling to get will last but I am operating from the premise that this will *not* be like polio where effective lifelong immunity was possible after proper vaccination (even with polio there are still points in Asia where it exists). I think this virus will be with us at some level for the foreseeable future. My presumption is I think those that would be impacted the most by catching it will be routinely getting a covid shot like they get a flu shot. Those that catch it will have available to them antivirals that can be prescribed at the pharmacy and not require IV infusions (like Tamiflu pills which are very effective if started early on).
That was my point gentlemen.
People get to make choices.
Zero risk does not exist.
Stephen: And your points are well taken and good food for thought.
Well, here I go again, daring to post yet again after being told off pretty well and put in my place a couple of days ago. Hopefully I won't cause a riot, but, I feel I need to since in my last response to a friendly comment from Wings, I had said:
"I have a slightly different/improved attitude towards the docs in the trenches after a dinner tonight with a dozen friends. But I will have to tell why later, I am too sleepy right now. " So I feel I ought to at least clear up what I meant by that. But warning: this will require more than one paragraph. If any of you are stressed by having to read more than a few sentences at one time, PLEASE SKIP THIS POST!
That night I had just come home from from a group dinner at a restaurant. A bit over a dozen of us, all over age 72, all vaccinated. 4 of us(2 couples) had previously been diagnosed with Covid. One ended up in the hospital. He actually had to be shipped to a very small hospital in another state, maybe 70 miles away, because our big hospital here in town- the one I worked at for so many years- was full. They did not have a place to put another Covid patient, though those numbers thankfully has absolutely plummeted in recent weeks. On top of that, he also had quite the temporary reaction to his vaccine, with a 103º fever and his arm had a lot of swelling. Probably because he already had antibodies following his case of Covid, I suppose.
So, I asked our friends who had Covid "How did your Docs treat you, what did they give you?". I was expecting to hear "Remesdesivir"(SP?) or some sort of antibody infusion, as I have some friends who have had one or both of those. To my absolute amazement and delight, ALL of them(with different docs) said " C, D and zinc". I could not believe it. The one time(a couple of months ago) I personally talked to a local doc about
that subject- an extremely smart anesthesiologist I used to work with before retiring- he had never heard of any of it. A week or two later when I asked him: "Are you taking your vitamin D?", he answered "I am since I talked to you". Now, admittedly, an anesthesiologist, does not treat Covid-19 patients. Still, he(like my URO who also had not heard of it) works every day with all manner of doctors who do, and they certainly discuss Covid and it's treatment. So I was sad to realize he had never heard D, C or zinc discussed.
But, this current news from my friends is extremely good news. It shows that, even if there is silence from our government and medical establishment on this subject, individual doctors are reading the studies and taking action. They are not waiting for the Holy Grail large, expensive RCT that will stir a Fauci to announce, "all of you should be doing this, and doctors should be prescribing this". (I still have never heard it mentioned by him, except almost by accident, in an interview where he was asked and admitted that he took 6000 of D as well as C. Then again, maybe I missed it?) But these docs, thank goodness, are not waiting!
I don't know how common it is, or how long they have been doing this, but some of these docs have read the studies and made the logical conclusion that there is a huge risk/benefit ratio in favor of utilizing all of these approaches, alone at first or with whatever drugs are needed. Yes, they are all pro vaccine, and pro whatever drug they think might help, which is fine, but they obviously think the very first thing that should be taken care of is C, D and zinc. The only thing needed now is to take the next logical step: why wait until a patient has to go to their doctor for Covid-19? Why not make a public service announcement from the authorities on this subject?
(Also, Docs, look into that IV C for those already in the hospital! But that may be a step too far?) But still, it is extremely encouraging to know that individual docs are going ahead with an approach that anyone should conclude, based on the studies, is a rational approach. YAY! I'm pretty sure their patients are benefiting from that, so thank goodness for these docs! One last thing: I am going to question them again later to make sure that C, D and zinc is really all they got.
I'm sure that is how they answered me, but they may have not quite understood my question. Surely my friend that had to be shipped to the out of state hospital got something more than that? But that makes no difference to my main point: At least SOME docs(maybe many?) realize the studies are strongly in favor of having somewhat high blood levels of C, D and zinc when fighting Covid, and they are acting on that knowledge, and not waiting on an OK from on high!
And that, my friends, is very good news for Covid patients. Maybe this is contributing to the rapid drop in cases we are seeing around here? At least a little? MAYBE? I'm sure the vaccines are a big factor, but our cases were dropping before many were vaccinated and before they really had time to work.
I hope you all get your vaccines soon! I also hope for this last year you have been doing these science verified things that put the odds so much in your favor! I bet most of you have. Good luck!
