hi everyone,

sorry I have been a little out of touch. Jeff and I went to Las Vegas for a few days last week and now we're scurrying around getting everything ready for the big day tomorrow. We are going to a hotel tonight because we have to be at the hospital at 5:30 AM, with his surgery scheduled for 7:30. I have my lists ready and will pack up everything this afternoon. We plan for a complete recovery! I will be in touch as soon as I can get back online. kat

Ditto Kat,

Wishing all goes well and prayers for a rapid recovery.

thank you everyone!  the surgery went very well - just as expected - Jeff was sitting up in a chair last night and feeling pretty good.  I'm staying at a local hotel and am on my way back to him.  today he'll be up walking around and hopefully will be going home tomorrow.  God bless all of you....kat

Kat,

You both will not believe what a difference one week will make in terms of feeling better,  Wish you the best this week and being back home will help.  Walk every day, just a comfortable slow pace and short distance.  Every day go just a bit further but only if comfortable with it.  It will help much with recovery.  Keep us updated as I am sure people are probably getting tired of hearing from me!

hi everyone,

thank you for your well wishes. Michael, I'll have to check your post to see how you are doing. :) We came home from the hospital today - just about 33 hours after surgery! we were very surprised and so happy to be home. Jeff continues to do very well - is passing gas and moving about every couple of hours. I'm going to make him take a pain pill tonight based on what most of you have recommended. we're trying to find comfortable shorts for him to wear because his regular boxer type shorts (PJs and athletic ones) rub his penis and bother him. I bought a few pairs of larger soft cotton ones. the kids are around so it's hard for him to lay around exposed. I bought some Depends and pads at the store tonight in preparation for next Thursday, when the catheder is removed. best wishes to all...kat

Hello Kat,

I had the same problems with the shorts, catheter, bag, drain tube, pouch, etc., so my wife bought me 2 cheapy light robes. Under that I wore a 3-4x t-shirt as a night shirt. They were very long and went down past my knees. I was then able to move around the house in reasonable comfort. I hope this will help Jeff till he gets rid of the catheter and bag.

Good luck, and speedy recovery

So great so see you two home. Hope you got some sleep. I've lost a few pounds during all this just running around doing the extra stuff, so - at least for me - some good things came out of the recuperating time.

We did what Mama Bluebird suggested - pajamas, ripped up the sides, and velcro tabs. However, didn't have to worry about being seen, either.

Also, when we went in to get the catheter removed, we set up the pad in the underwear ahead of time and put it in a big envelope. That way, it wasn't so embarrassing in the waiting room or going back to the exam room. And THAT step will be here before you know it!

Spinbiscuit,

Hi again!!  I just read that you wore a large tee shirt as a night shirt and loose robe.  That sounds like the best thing for Curtis to wear too...the most comfortable anyway, but what would you wear out walking or didn't you start walking until the catheter was taken out?

Hi Wicket,

Fortunately I only had the drain tube/pouch and catheter/bag for 6 days. During that time I was just limping around the house (still being sore). Walking with the cath./bag takes a little effort. After the drain tube & cath. were removed, and I was feeling better walking short distances became more comfortable. Just a note here most men will NOT come home with the drain tube, but my surgeon thought I should have it left in. Without the cath. regular loose fitting pants and Depends were fine.

Hi Spinbiscuit,

No one has said, but I assume I will have to buy him some jokey shorts to hold the pad in place after the catheter.  He wears boxers now and I know those won't work.

Ellen

That is absolutely correct he will need jokeys, but first buy the Depends underware for men they are a lot more absorbent, and less prone to leak. They can be purchased by the package (20) or case (60), and the Serenity pads for men were very good. All these are for after the catheter is removed.

Glen,

You were talking about leaking from the depends.  I didn't realize it could get that bad.  Will I need to buy a plastic pad for the bed...what about where he will be sitting a lot?

Ellen,

It never really was that bad so my wife got out some of the big beach towels and doubled them over, and I slept on one of those. Just to be safe after the cath. was removed we put a big leaf bag under the bottom bed sheet. A week or so later we didn't need it. During the day I could tell when I needed to change the Depends so leaks were rare. Like I mentioned before; I was one of the slow ones in the group. Some of the guys had the cath. removed, and barely needed a pad.

Thanks Glen....guess it's better to be safe than sorry so I think I'll do what your wife did.

Ellen,
The boxer briefs work very well. If you can find them, Jockey brand makes a really soft, slightly longer leg style. C will still feel like he has his trusty boxers on with the security of a brief to hold a pad in place.
He may be very fortunate and need nothing so buy small quantities of protection at first. I bought 2 smaller packages of the poise pads just in case and never used a one. Here's to hoping for the best! Vickie

OH...off the subject...Good news at our house....as of November 9th, his 50th birthday, Paul will be promoted to Lt. Paul :>)
