Sorry I'm just full of questions!!  I know Curtis has to be on a liquid diet the day before surgery, but somewhere I read he had to be afterwards too...why is that and for how long?   Also has anyone been told not to drink anything for 13 hours before surgery...that seems like a very long time to go without water!!

His instructions are that he isn't to drink anything after midnight, but surgery isn't til 1PM.  He's also instructed to prep like he did for a colonscopy...why does he have to be so cleaned out?Everyone else I've heard just took a fleet enema and that was it

Good Morning Wicket,

The questions just keep coming don't they!?  I was the same way.  My husband (Gordon) also had to prep as for a colonoscopy and couldn't drink after midnight.  Luckily his surgery was scheduled for 6:00am.  I'm not sure why but I've always been told that they don't like anything in the gut because of something to do with the anesthetic and possibly getting nauseated and vomiting.  Also, The lower bowel is right behind the prostate and they want it clean I think in case it is accidentally penetrated and a little more room to work in during the surgery.  I'm not positive on this answer.  I think Swimom could tell you for sure.  It is a long time to go without nurishment though.  I always used to worry about my mother who was diabetic and had to go that long before a surgery.

As for the liquid diet, Gordon didn't eat any solids the day of surgery but was able to eat what he wanted the next.  I read it is important though for them not to get constipated after surgery though so add stool softeners to your list.  They're not to have any enemas or things like that inserted in the rectum for about 3 months after surgery because it could rupture the bowel lining that was close to the prostate.

Hope this helps.  He'll be fine Ellen, hungry but fine!

It's the standard prep for prostate surgery. Reduces risk of infection in case intestine gets nicked ... I had surgery in March: no fluids by mouth after midnight. My operation started after 1 p.m. While waiting, I was hooked up to an IV, so your body is getting fluid ... I was on a regular died after surgery. Solid foods. I would recommend adding prunes, or prune juice, and a fiber cereal to diet to assist with regular bowel movements after he returns home.

Hi Wicket,

I had the same instructions as you.  I could only have liquids the entire day before surgery and drank the powder to clean out the system.  Very similar prep for a colonoscopy, I was told. That was not much fun so tell your husband to take the day off before surgery since he will be visiting the bathroom frequently.  Chicken broth and Fresca helped me get through that day. Nothing after midnight and my surgery was also in the afternoon.  After surgery and the entire following day I was on mostly clear liquids but could have crackers and some soft food.  Once they know your bowels are working properly, you can start on more of the solids.  I really did not feel like eating much anyways right after surgery.  I ended up staying two nights at the hospital and definitely ready for some real food when leaving on that third day.  I did make sure to eat prunes every day and did not have any issues with constipation.  It sounds like you will be very prepared.  It is very helpful to know ahead what to expect.  Remember to go home with the drugs you need: pain killers, naseau pills, and bladder spasm pills.  Make sure to ask for a leg bag and overnight bag.  My nurse also cut the tubing length on the leg bag to make it fit better.  First two days (for me) was no picnic, but after that each day was better and better.  Like many have said, walk, walk, walk.

hi Ellen,

Jeff had to do two enemas - one the night before and one 2 hours before arriving at the hospital. then he was on a liquid diet the day of surgery and the next morning. He wasn't very hungry the day of surgery anyway. they kept asking him did the food settle OK. then the day after surgery they brought him a huge lunch. even with taking the stool softners and eating prunes, he did become somewhat constipated and ended up drinking something that got his bowels moving. but that was almost a week later! don't worry about that right now. I did end up running to WalMart almost every day for one thing or another, but fortunately it's very close to our house. it felt good to be out around people who were living their "normal" lives. I'm finding that our doctors do not do everything the same, so follow your's advice.

Hi Ellen,

I went through the same pre-op prep as everyone else. The dinner I got after surgery was Jello, fruit juice, and some other bland items. The following day I was able to eat a regular breakfast, lunch, and dinner with no restrictions. By 10 am next morning I was home, and eating regular food plus prunes, Medemucel, and a stool softner. It wasn't fun, but all the extra fiber worked in about 3 days. From then on my system had started to recovered from the shock of surgery. Surgery did not affect my appetite.

Hey Ellen,

You may be thinking about our soup and crackers and jello in “OUR JOURNEY”… This was a personal preference that we did for constipation and letting the gases clear the system.  Really didn’t want heavy meals at this point….Still needed help with the constipation….   I’ve read a lot of postings that many have eaten big meals the very next day.  So ~ I guess it will depend on Curtis J  He may want steak and lobster !!!  or Glen’s BBQ  J

The catheter came first.... we felt it best to stay home, rest, eat light meals, walk, rest, eat light meals, walk, etc….  The catheter was our friend and we knew there was a lot of healing taking place inside… so gave it every chance to heal nicely  with no problems.

Take Care,

Wicket,

I am sitting on top of the suitcases, DWT went back to work for a few hours to eak out as much vacation time as possible for recovery. We are leaving tonight on an overnight flight and finally arriving tomorrow evening at the hotel in Santo Domingo. I am sick to my stomach all I can think about is what lays ahead for DW and me.

Liquid diet, buy some bottles of Ensure it will keep his energy up and he will not feel hungry. I am taking some with me for DWT. He did this for his colonoscopy and it worked well. No hunger.

Good luck

SL,

I sympathize with the way you're feeling.  I know I'll feel the same way when we have to go.  In fact the other night we went to the movies and out to dinner.  While waiting for the dinner to be served he started talking about it and I told him that I wouldn't be able to eat dinner if we didn't change the subject and he understood.

It's to bad you're not going to be able to be close to hime to have the procedure done and have family and friends around you.  I know our daughter will be with me and maybe our son will come down too...We haven't told the kids yet.  Curtis keeps putting it off.  We were going to tell our daughter last weekend when she came over, but her daughter was with her and we didn't want to get her all upset...Next weekend Ashtyn will be with her father so then we'll tell her.

That's a great idea about Ensure...gee I learn a lot in here. I'm going to buy him some of that...also I like the idea of the soup..taking out the good stuff and letting him have the broth...I'll take the good stuff.  Wouldn't want it to go to waste!!  yeah

Anyway good luck and I'll be thinking of you and I'm sure everyone else in here will be to...Let us know how everything turns out.  Hugs
