Hi sjr,

I'm wondering if you are here in DC at the GWU Hospital? If memory serves me correctly Dr. Engel is your urologist. Please forgive me if I'm mistaken as I suffer from a bit of sleep deprivation these last 2 weeks. In any case we are all thinking of you, and hoping everything is going smoothly. Soon you'll be able to go home and work on your bike (I toredown, cleaned, and lubed every moving part on my S10S when I broke my ankle) of coarse this was years ago when I didn't need glasses. So good luck, and let us know what the doctor said about riding your bike.

Thank you all for all your concern. I think I had a textbook procedure on Wed. The robotic surgery took ~2 hours but adding on prep etc, I went in at 8:40 and awake fully 12:10. I got up to my room with the usual drain, IV and cath. I had ZERO PAIN. There was a discomfort like a full blatter, but not at all like I expected. When I tried to get up and walk in the evening I was too dizzy, so I just sat in the chair and was fine. I didn't get any sleep, but don't know why since I was really feeling fine. Thursday moring they took out the IV and drain. I never felt hungry but tried eating Thurs mroning and could not believe how good it tasted.  After breakfast I got up and walked with no problem....I felt like I could have walked 5 miles. The problem with walking the forst night was the was still anesthesia in my system. By the next moring my system had cleared out any traces and I  had no dizzyness. I came home after lunch, and changing the bags for the cath was easy. Again I didn't sleep last night, but I don't feel tired and I walked around the block this morning with ease.

I would recommend this procedure and Dr Engel to anyone. Now I look forward to Tue when I can get the last tube out of my body and then resuming cycling.

Hi sjr

Glad to hear everything went so well, and I agree that Dr. Engel is the best surgeon anyone could possibly have. So now it sounds like you are on the fast track to recovery. Good luck, but be careful don't make the mistake I made, and end up back in the hospital for more surgery.

Hi sjr,

Yeah!!! Your home :-)

Nice update and this will be invaluable information for future members to read!!!!!
Now the only thing I worry about is the cycling.  I can’t stress enough about that little guy “the sphincter muscle”  …..  you take care of him.  If you have to cycle soon ~ check out that split seat that was recommended.
Glad your home and doing extremely well….
Keep us informed of your healing/recovery period…. Okay!!!  We care...
Continuing to keep you close in thought and prayer…
Take care  ~

All, just an update. I had surgery on 27 Sep....everything was perfect (textbook case). I used several pads a day, and now almost 2 months later, down to one...but I can see progress (although very slow). I did go bike riding 40 days later with absolutely no problem. Since my surgery, I have received several calls from friends of friends etc asking questions on the procedure.

I feel like an advertisement for the robotic surgery. Many have gone to the same doctor, Jason Engel at GW in Washington, DC. All with similalr results. Its hard to believe people who are eligible and who's insurance would pay, still opt for the "open" route. The healing time and pain free aspects of robotic are far superior...but I can understand those who have other issues. I never even needed so much as an aspirin!

Still awaiting my 3 month appt for the "0" score on PSA.

sjr,

I had the same experience with my Da Vinci on 11/1/06. I had no pain and never took an aspirin for pain while in hospital. I got the catheter out this past Monday and have gone from gushing to just a little leakage since then. My surgeon was Dr. Joseph Smith at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He has done over 900 Da Vinci's and his suregry schedule is full for three months out. He does 9 Da Vinci's a week. Our two experiences reinforce that if you get an experienced surgeon that the results will be good. I wil have my first PSA check in mid December. Good to hear you have done so well.

Hi sjr & sjr’s wife,

Good to hear from you both!!! Thank you for touching base… Glad things are going so well for you. Please touch base when you can! Looking forward to celebrating with you..

You’re right…. We had all options available and insurance would have covered. We would still go with “lift the hood and feel and see”… nice that we have options!!

Take care,

Lee & her Buddy
