<!---|abreak|--->i had a radical prostate surgery done on 10/23/2006... and yes i was scared to death about all of this... i no longer have a prostate and lymph nodes. the doc told me that is the best way to beat the disease is to remove the offending organ. i went to work today for the first time in 3 weeks. my prognosis is good the doc said all the cancer is gone... lab tests show nothing... but... that darn cathoder i still have to wear pads for my leakage... but i have been working on those muscles and i leak less and less... one side effect i was not aware of is the doc told me AFTER my surgery... i am now sterile... since they severed the "pipes" from my testes to my prostate... so if you want kids... store your sperm.... if anyone wants to chat about this they can contact me on msn messenger ... <!---|abreak|--->i am glad i went thru the procedure.... that gave me the best odds to live a longer life... i am only 54

Hey there and welcome to the club nobody wants to join. Sounds like you made a wise choice with your treatment and you are coming along ok. I had mine removed 10/12/06 and am almost 100% really about 98.5% continent. Hardley any drips or leaks no pads and back in my boxers. Now I'm working on the ED have had some signs of life there. I hope you will check this board from time to time and will post your experience and words of encouragement to the new guys that come on board that are scared and can use our help and knowledge of what it is. I am 57 years old, so not to much older than you. Thanks for posting and letting us know about you.

this is Iggy again... about my surgery... i know the idea of prostate cancer is scarey as hell... but if a person is going to get a cancer.. prostate cancer has one of the highest survival rates.
i do advise anyone with this disease to get a second opinion or even a third. I chose the only viable option for me. i could not take the chance with hormone therapy and radiation... the success rate for that is less than total removal. I was told by my physican that if i undergo radiation instead of surgery if the radiation failed... surgery is no longer an option and i would have to hope that hormone therapy for the rest of my shorten life. and from what i read  hormone for a prolonged period is not that successful.
I do advise any male from age 40 to get psa results every year... and insist the doctor tell you the number of your prostate reading... do not just let the doctor tell you your prostate results look ok... make the doc TELL you your numbers... and if it is above 2.. insist for more difinitive tests.... to find out if it is high from a harmless infection or is it high due to cancer...
the one thing i found out is that too many doctors have a different idea as to what is a high psa reading.... there seems to be NO standard set.... it is your life your doc is dealing with and it is up to you to know all the facts so you can make the proper decisions.
Most of all do not be afraid of what is happening... just deal with it and do the proper thing to save your live.
Prostate cancer is curable when caught early.
If you have been diagnosed with this disease an need someone to talk to you are more than welcome to find me on msn messenger and we can talk.  Maybe i an be of assistance to you to ease your fears... yes it is scarey... but you can get thru it....  for all those with this situation ahead of them... Gods speed....
