Having recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, I'm in the process of choosing a doctor.  Has anyone in the Boston area been treated by Dr. Jim C. Hu at Brigham and Women's or Dr. David S. Wang at Boston Medical Center?  Or is there any other doctor you have been impressed by that I should consider?  My thought at this point is that I want to go with the DaVinci system.  Or is there a website that gives good background information about doctors that I could use to find more information?  Thank you.

Hi Mogog,

The generic advice is to go to have your surgery done at a major medical center in a big city (it sounds like you have those two items covered) and find a doctor who has done the specific surgery that you are having done many, many, many times so that he/she is very experienced.

I think that there are web sites that give lists of doctors who are experienced in the DaVinci method. I do not know what those web sites are but others reading your thread will and they should provide the information.

I also think that I have seen this topic discussed in another thread in this chat room. Does anyone else know which thread that was?

Best of luck.

If I was looking for the best in Boston, there's one urologist who stands above the rest: Jerome Richie at Dana-Farber Cancer Center. He's the most renowned in the area.

Welcome there is a lot of knowledge here but each of filters it through our personal experience. So do your own research and use this site a resourch to help you make the best decision for you. You can start with this site:

http://www.henryfordhealth.org/19085.cfm

I chose the Da Vinci but the best advice I can give is to go to a clinic that specializes in prostate treatment and all of the treatment options available. In that situation you will get unbiased information about the various treatments. I cannot over emphasize the importance of having the best and most experienced surgeon possible. There is a huge difference in the outcome based on who is doing the surgery as you will see in the above site.  The ford clinic is considered one of the pioneers in the da vinci method and is now doing the procedure on an out patient basis. I didn't go there but I got a recommendation from one of their surgeons for a surgeon in my area and was pleased.

Don't look to your doctor for post op  rehabilitation. Use this site. The thread in this site "Vaccum pumps" has the best information that I have seen for recovery.  Particularly posts by "Swimon"  She knows more than the docs. I wish I had found this site six months ago. I have only been here a short time and learned more about post issues than in the last six months.  Good luck

Hello Modog,

I want to welcome you to the group. You are fortunate to live in the Boston area I'm sure you'll find a top notch very experienced daVinci specialist there. I'm sorry I don't know any surgeons in Boston, but one of the other members will soon post some referrals. Good luck with your search.
