How long does it take to get back a full erection.  It's been almost 5 months since the surgery, but I don't think we've given it enough time or effort.  Curtis seems to think it sould automatically come back after that many months.  We've only tried twice and he gives up to easily and says well this isn't going to work.  So I told him I'd ask you guys in here what your experience has been.

It's really great that we can talk about anything in here, but still a bit strange.  tongue

Ellen, I think it's important for Curtis to keep the blood flowing (by any means) and work on getting an erection (no matter how small or stiff or whatever). the blood flow is so important for healing. it's been almost 6 months since Jeff had his surgery. He gets an erection but can not have intercourse with it. we need to use the pump if we want to have intercourse. Swimom told us (and I've heard it elsewhere too) that it takes one month for an inch of nerves to heal. Jeff actually woke up the other night with an erection and has been feeling more tingling going on down there, so we know that healing is taking place. take care, kat

Hi Ellen!
Your story is similar to ours . . . .surgery September 27th and still not much happening.

I learned on this very forum that there really was such a thing as orgasm without erection . . . .with some scrotum fondling and a few other "tricks" Bob manages a non erect orgasm quite frequently.

Of course he says it's not the same, but hey, he's not doing totally without.

So show Curtis that indeed "something" can be happening.

I hate to sound like I do but so far there seems to be very little hope expressed for this area. I'm 48 years old and will have surgery in April. What I've read in this forum so far leeds me to beleive that my sex life is over. non erection orgasms, pumps my doctor talks about needles and erections of 50% or less. It sounds like I should come to terms with my sex life being over. Are there any success stories out there? If I sound angry it's because I am. We live in a world that has sex in movies, TV advertising, the computer and now it looks like that is a show I won't be able to participate in. Is there any good news or stories?

Hey Alex,

No, your sex life is not over. But it will take some work, cooperation from you partner and a lot of patience. If you have read other posts on this forum you will find there are lots of therapies to get potency back after treatment for PCa. I had some ED and was using Levitra prior to surgery. (11 weeks ago) I am getting sensation back slowly and about 50% erections. My wife is very understanding and supportive and this is very important. We both know that we will be back in the sack again soon.  (No the age of 72 is not a misprint!)

Good luck...

Alex

There is hope, I am 49 and it's been 47 days from my surgery and I have had a few erections and have had relations with my wife on two different occasions. I would say it's been about 90% of before surgery and I have not even had any medication to help out. But I can get an erection and have pentatration almost as it was. Don't get me wrong it's not the same exactly but it still works and feel very good with my results, my biggest thing right now is I don't quite have the same urge, but I am still healing also. So there is hope there and you may be lucky, we are all different.

Hi again all!
I guess I forgot to add to my post that this is only our way of dealing with the wait for normal to return. We too have been told that healing takes time and to be patient. So my posting above is our way of dealing with a temporary situation which is kind of what Ellen was talking about as well.

Hey Wicket, I would take Pad free over return of erections any day. I'm still using 3-5 pads per day. You did not mention if you were on ED drug therapy or not? If not, You should talk to your Dr.. Mine still has me on 25mg every other day and 100mg as needed. With my leaking problem the wife has not been interested so as needed is not often unless I'm alone!
Good Luck, KW

FWIW, I am one of the youngest guys here (maybe the youngest?), had surgery in July 2006, and have not regained erectile function. See my signature for more info, but I use a pump for therapy. Flat tire effect from right after surgery is gone and I have had a bit of firmness on occasion but nothing suitable for penetration without the pump. With the pump I have had intercourse several times. I keep telling myself it is still early days and to be patient.

Every patient is different, I suppose, and every operation differs according to physiological circumstances and the skill of the surgeon. It goes without saying, moreover, that much depends on whether surgery is accompanied by nerve sparing procedures. But in my case (I was 64 at the time of my operation) erections came back naturally about a year after surgery. The sex drive isn’t quite what it was, and sometimes foreplay needs to include a little more manual stimulation than used to be the case. But my wife and I can enjoy full penetrative sex, without artificial aids of any kind. Don’t be dismayed by what you read on forums. Those who recover fully from radical prostate surgery tend not to write to forums, with the result that forum discussions, though extremely useful, can give a slightly over-pessimistic picture. Don’t give up hope, and be prepared to use lots and lots of patience.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Routine blood test in October 2004 showed PSA of 14.6. No outward symptoms of any trouble whatsoever (peeing etc quite normal), but prostate biopsy in January 2005 revealed presence of aggressive tumour. Given bone scan and thorough pre-op checks in March (chest X-ray, checks on heart and breathing) by which time PSA had risen to 16.9. Operation ("traditional" open prostatectomy with nerve sparing) carried out in April 2005. A month after the operation, PSA had fallen to 0.05. Apart from incontinence (beginning to go after 4 weeks) there were no post-op problems. Blood test done in late August 2005, four months after the operation, showed PSA of 0.01. I have had five PSA blood tests since then (one every three months) each one coming in at either 0.01 or <0.01.

Ellen,Alex

Hang in their guys there is light at the end of the tunnel. As I have written before I am almost 4 months post op. I bought the Vacurect pump and my doctor has prescribed Levitra (which I had been using pre surgery anyway). I use the pump everyday and take the levitra every other day. I have had many very rigid erections so far and my wife and I finally re consummated our marrige last night. Things went fine. So don't give up

Injection Thereapy

Moving toward month four since surgery. I had two expereinces where I felt an urge and got slightly engorged on my own, but not really erect. Mostly I've been doing Trimix injections three times a week. This stuff definately gives you an erection. At first it was a little difficult but at this point, I don't even think about the injection, it's not more than a pinch and most of the discomfort is in the head. Anyway, I'm doing low doses of Viagra on the off days, all under Doc's orders. I do look forward to getting an erection without sticking myself but in the meantime.....

I don't want to get to graphic but how soon before you have sex do you put the injection in? is right before so there's an interuption in the fore play making for a less than romantic moment. Is it a half an hour before so there is a chance for some real foreplay to give the impression of romance. My doctor mentioned these injections just in case I had problems but to me it seems like it would take away from the erotic moment

Aztec, it has been reported on here that some men have zero difficulities with ED. Look at TC-Vegas's thread. He reported "growing" in the recovery room. Everyone is different. My husband has his surgery in 2 weeks. At this point, ED is the least of our worries. I don't know if you are married or have a partner or not, but if you do, talk to her regarding your fears. A lot of recovery deponds upon the motivation of both partners. One thing I read on line says having a partner that is very motivated is great for rehab! Good luck to you. Courtney

Hey Ellen and Alex,
I am just now at six months post robotic surgery. I had T2c stage disease at the point of the operation, and one nerve had to be cut. My doctor did plastic surgery on the nerve, and I know it's growing back because of all the weird sensations and because I can notice that there is a little more firmness on awakening. I believe the real recovery rate is one millimeter per month, because the place where the nerve isn't that long to begin with.

Alex, there is also a step before having to use the shots, and that is the MUSE, which is a little suppository about the size of a sesame seed that is put into the urethra with what someone called a Barbi Baster. It has the same effect as the injection only not as strong and in some folks not as effective, but it is a little less gross sounding than a shot in the you-know-what. It takes about 30 min to work just like the other things, so you can have foreplay. I haven't had the shot, but it takes more than just a few minutes to work, so foreplay is also possible. Other people have posted that they didn't need these artificial enhancements forever, and eventually, with enough sex, they were able to go back to the natural way. If the nerves are spared (and your best shot at this is with the robot, in my opinion) then the likelihood is you are going to get back what you had before.

I was using Viagra before, because of high blood pressure, high blood pressure medicine, and an SSRI antidepressant which can really take the lead out of the pencil. I was put on a small daily dose of Viagra, and a weekly full dose to check the response. I also use a pump to keep the tissues elastic. Still waiting but hopeful. Many say that it really takes a year.

But I'm here to tell you that the orgasms are something else! Can make your eyes water! With continued stimulation, they go on and on and on... Like I said on another post, for these orgasms, if I'd have known, I'd have had the prostate out years ago. I like the "productive" (wet) kind, too, but, as odd as this may sound, these are more than a fair trade.

If your nerves can be spared, you may not need anything in the way of pills, shots, suppositories, or pumps, especially in the long run. In the short term, this is a operation and the area has been traumatized and the nerves go into a kind of state of shock. They may not work right away, but with a little time, the area will heal and the function will start up again.

Also, don't worry about the peeing. With robotic surgery, you will have a great chance of being dry right away (as soon as the catheter is out). I was the second day after that, even though I had to have one for a month. I still wear a little pad, because sometimes there are a few drops of leakage with some exertion (lifting, passing gas, coughing).

Alex, and everyone, get the book by Dr. Scardino, and also the one by Dr. Patrick Walsh called Surviving Prostate Cancer. Read them carefully. You will feel much better. Knowledge is power.

All the best, and we are all here for you.

Hey DJ!
Sounds like we are kinda in the same boat as I'm on two medications for high blood pressure as well as a medication for depression. Hope things are going well for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Trey

Hey guys, as I have posted before, it's been over two years since my surgery. Erections were very slow in coming back for the first year and then gradually with the help of the pump. Tried Cialis first with only a back ache out of that. Successfully have been using the Osbon pump. Have had some pretty good sex with using that, once you get over the feeling of saying "excuse me a sec, while I pump up" it's not so bad. Now using Viagra with some success. Have had sex twice with no aids of any kind, so hope is always there. Stay away from alcohol and exercise as much as possible. Everyone is different, but with patience and desire, some form of sex life WILL return.

yeah  would strongly recommend the injections using Trimix and the small needles used by diabetics.  The pills are expensive and don't work for many people.  Why get discouraged and have to wait months for an erection after RP when you can do a painless injection and get a good erection almost immediately?  I think that some docs are hesitant to recommend injection because they want their patients to recover "natural" erections to enhance the docs reputation.  In the meantime the drug companies are getting rich at $8 a pill and we are not getting erections.  The Trimix costs a little over a dollar a shot.  My surgeon doesn't want to talk to me anymore because I won't take Viagra. Maybe he's afraid of losing out on the next cruise or other perk!

Allan,

It is great that shots work well isn't it? Most men who try them do have good success. The purpose in using PDE5 drugs isn't just the "erection" or lack there of. In fact, using shots is not entirely for the puropse of sex (although that is indeed a plus for stressed emotions) so much as it is to maintain tissue health. Shots also seem to assist in improving venous leakage for many men. Injections starting at about 3 months post-op in the event that oral meds have not been successful is a very good idea.

The most useful purpose in using oral meds is to facilitate nocturnal erections early into recovery when most tissue atrophy is likely to occur. The release of NO may not be noticable in the way of an erection but the positive effects are strongly believed to protect tissues by improving blood flow which may also help facilitate nerve healing. More 02, hopefully better tissue health. Better tissue health, better response to oral meds in time. In some men, natural function returns and they no longer require anything. The same idea can be said of injections. Frequent erections, be they facilitated by injections, MUSE or oral meds and to a point, even the pump, can only help. I am a big believer in pump therapy myself. I personally think the pump prevents much of the shrinkage problem and helps minimize atrophy.

Frustration is natural. It is not the norm to suddenly have something taken away and not be stressed!!! You do make a good point about not waiting when there is an alternative. I love this forum! Everyone has so much to offer in the way of experience. Sharing what works for each of you is really laying some good solid roads for others to travel.

You're a little ahead of me. I don't have a partner at the monment so timing is a non-issue. I have starting dating someone and if things go well, I may be more educated on the subject :-)

Alex,

I know exactly how you feel, been there done that! Although there are no guarantees, that goes both ways. There is no guarantee that you don't gain back 100% of you presurgery abilities. I haven't been writing here to often lately because my life has been kind of hectic, but alot of the veterans here know me. It's been 3 1/2 years since my surgery. I didn't use any pills or pumps at all and fell into a 3 year depression were there was no sex at all with my loving wife of 25 years. I just knew my sex life was over for good! Hell, I thought everything was over! But thanks to some very good friend in this forum and other PC groups and a lot of hard work, I'm back!!!!! I am having unbeleivable sex, yes unaided intercouse and my orgasms are more explosive and last longer than I ever could have imagined! I can't beleive it every time I get there, I'm thinking,"Is this gona ever end??" I think the whole neiborhood hears me and I didn't used to make a sound. It's a miracle as far as I'm concerned. Is my penis shorter, yes! Is it as hard as it used to be, no! But I'll tell you, the sex is better now than I ever remembered. Sex is 95% in your head and if you beleive your sex life is over, then it's going to be! Most of the stories you are reading here are recent postop guys who are letting their feelings out here, because thats what we do here! It's with out a doubt the best place to just let it out. Your pain, your fears, your successes, you are with people who understand exactly what you are thinking and feeling. WE KNOW!!! You wanted a success story? Here I am and against all kinds of odds! It took me a while to get here but I'm now a happy man again! Pull up some of my old posts from November when I started on this forum and you'll understand just how far I've come! Hang in there brother! You'll be just fine, its just going to take a while. Anything is possable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your friend,

Pete

PS: A little prayer doesn't hurt either! Right Bill??

Not to be offensive but using pills to stimulate nocturnal emissions to keep your dick from atrophying sounds like so much $&$@#)@_! put out by the pharmaceutical companies. Once your prostate gland is removed you probably won't have any emissions anyway.  Has anyone seen any research to support this? tongue
