How long are hormone shots effective?

On May, 29th I will have a Zoladex injection. This will mark 15 months on hormone therapy. I keep reading shots are usually effective from 18-24 months.Then I talk to guys who've been on shots for three years. Is this 18-24 months just a manufacture's rule of thumb? Thanks.

My husband will have his 4th Lupron shot 6/06 - his oncologist said he would continue this treatment as long as it worked. I've seen some of the same info you refer to - reasons for HT becoming refractory must depend on the aggressiveness of the cancer, where it had spread to and the fact that everyone is different. It's hard to say.

You're right, it would be interesting to hear from others who are on have been or are currently on HT.

A very kind person recently said to me "Don't let him live like he is dying". That meant everything in the world to me.

I wish you well and hope for continued success with your treatment. After all, that's what we're all looking for!

In his recently published book on hormone treatment and diet, Dr Charles  Myers has a section on myths, myth #1 being that hormone therapy is only effective for 18 months.

Apparently that theory started some years ago when research was presented relating to one section of men at that time who were generally diagnosed at a much later stage than is uaually the case today.

Dr Myers also makes the following points:

That figure related to very advanced cases; even then many had a lot better prognosis.

it was an average, and you do not have to be average,

treatment options have also improved,

most men he sees who have been classed as hormone resistant are not.
