I am new to this site...... I've never heard of having a low PSA and yet my urologist says he does not like the feel of my prostate and tells me there is still a 30% chance of prostate cancer, I have never heard of this, I always thought it was the opposite..... are there others in this predicament?  I will appreciate your input on this..... thank you...... Hello Richard,

Welcome to the forum. This is the place to be for support and info.

I don't know how the doc comes up with 30% chance after doing a DRE. Maybe others can enlighten us on that. Its really good that you are getting it checked out just in case.

Nice chatting with you last night in the chat room. Stay close...

Rick,

The 30% id a statistical figure. As you know, statistics are not the end all, be all. There are many, many journal sites you can begin searching through but, it might be in your best interest to wait until the biopsy / urethrascope are done so you will have something to look up. Whether your UT / prostate condition is cancer related or not, there still has to be a diagnosis. Don't go scaring yourself into a tizzy just yet. The imagination can do some wicked things to a man's mind...please be cautious.
The unecessary, long waits for tests are enough to drive a person buggy. Try to find a way to keep busy and off the subject for part of the day everyday. Volunteer, take up a new excersise habit, paint the house, fix the neighbors fence! Anything that'll redirect your mind a bit.

If you really need to look up a few things...because you are like most people on earth...try places like Urology Times or Medscape (urology). These may be of some use. Most of all, try to realx. 18 days is a long way away and even longer when you're anxious. Best of luck...sounds like you've had some already given your history.

Richard, My husbands PSA was 2.6 last summer and the DRE was negative.  His doctor started calling him 2 months later trying to get a follow up PSA.  Kurt, like a lot of men, put it off.  In Jan, 07

with a lot of pushing, he finally had the test.  It jumped to 4.1. Doc said biopsy, Kurt said no, I said yes, and as you can see from our signature, I won that battle.  Docs say that cancer could have been there at least 3 years maybe longer, but probably not much less.  His PSA's during that 3 years were always below 2.6.  He just thought he was prone to prostate infections.  We caught his just in time.  It was very close to breaking the margins.  Doc said that it was at margin, just hadn't broken through to give us a positve margin outcome.  We were very lucky and he is only 47.

PSA is said to be the best predictor of PCa, however, I would go with the docs suggestion and have a biopsy.  At least you can then put your mind to rest.  What is a little bit of discomfort, if it means saving your life?  I wish you the best and please keep posting.  We may be able to help you, and/or you may be able to help others.  Good Luck,  Courtney

Hey Rick, nice chatting the other night.  I would go ahead with the biopsy.  I had a 12 core and it was not all that bad.  i may have used a few pain killers that evening but nothing after that.  You will feel better if you know for sure.

Look forward to seeing you around the room.

Hey Rick, I know that you feel like you are all alone, but you are not. You have found us. And even though you would not know me if you bumped into me in the street, by staying here, you will "know" me and the others. When my husband went in for surgery, I got on the computer in the waiting room and went straight here. I saw a thread that said that the waiting room at our hospital must be full since the "folks" from Oklahoma were there too. I didn't get to meet the son who was posting for his dad. He had surgery right before Kurt, and thanks to this web site he had traveled overseas to have his surgery in Austin. The morning following surgery, I walked up to the nurses station to ask the doctor a question. As I approached, I saw this man talking to the doc. He said, "Are their other people here from OK?" The doctor looked at me and then back at the other man. I said, we are from OK. He looked at me and said Courtney? I said yes, not sure who or how anyone there would know me. We traveled out of state for surgery. He said, "ChiOkc". He was with us from the beginning. He too had found this site. It was as if one of my closest friends was there with us. So, you see, you may not know me by sight, but you will learn about each of us. And hopefully, you will not need us for long, but if you do, we will be here. Courtney

Hello Courtney, that's an amazing story. You really are like family. This site has helped me tremendously and feeling not so alone. I just want to say thank you for caring... kurt is very fortunate to have someone like you in his life. on my way right now to the dermatologist, a deadly melanoma on my arm. Two years ago and 35 stitches and doing well.... I'm just getting one challenge after another..., I will try to roll with the punches............

sincerely, Richard...pa

Hi Rick!
It sounds like we have a lot in common! I'll be thinking about you as you have your biopsy. Since I finished my radiation treatments and my life has returned to normal, I pretty much have put PCA behind me. I may be taking it too lightly but I think its my own way of coping with it. I'll be anxious to hear how everything goes and would love to chat with you. Keep me posted! Trey

hi trey....was your psa low when you were first diagnosed? Did the urologist feel something suspicious with your prostate exam? This is what happened to me. I'm alone allso and my independence is extremely important..... did you have any side effects with the radiation? I appreciate your help.... I'm really scared right now......... the urologist said he wants to check back and front...o boy..... he said he will put me out for .. 10 minutes..... I will go to a medical center where they do these procedures.

thanks for your help -- Richard -- PA

Rich,

Sorry if I'm late.  I just found out about this forum this week.

Having gone through 5 (yes, 5) biopsy sessions totally 92 needle pokes, I strongly recommend that you find a urologist who can anesthetize the nerve bundle adjacent to the prostate.  I had my next to last one done that way (the urologist had been on the receiving end once himself) and it was like day and night.

When they tell you the stick is like a bee sting, it is.  BUT, bee stings hurt and having one inside your rectum and prostate hurts like hell.

Fortunately, I was under general anesthetic for the last one that totalled 44 pokes, and they finally found a malignancy after 4 years of elevated PSAs and all them pokes.

I'm going in for my seed implants next Tuesday.

Dick

Hi Rick

While my circumstances were not similar to yours, I stupidly avoided having a biospy for three years after it was recommended to me.  Don't let anyone scare you about having a biopsy and make sure if you have one that they take at least 20-core samples to give you greater assurance as to whether or not you have PCa and at what stage (I had a 29-core biopsy).  I was lucky to still be in an ealier stage of PCa when I was diagnosed three years later than I should have been, but I was not at the earliest stage.  Just make sure that if you have a biopsy that the urologist numbs the prostate in some way so that the biopsy will be essentially painless.  You seem to be in a situation where having the biopsy may take some of the worry away from you and tell you definitively whether or not you have PCa.  I hope and pray that you do not have PCa.  If you do, I can assure you that many of our wonderful memebers will be here for you.

You might be interested in reading my journey with prostate cancer by clicking on the link below.  It gives further information on my biopsy and may answer some of your questions on radiation treatment, including my side effects (which were mild and have now gone away since treatment ended in April 2007).  Also, my journey includes some links to helpful PCa resources.

Best of luck!

Rick, You never did mention your number and you absolutely don't have to.  It sounds like you fall in the same category that I do and that is where "they" tell you that you have a 10% to 30% chance of having cancer.  I won't worry about 10% but a 1 in 3 chance I don't like.  I think that we had a 30% chance of rain today and the clouds are moving in.  Everyone has their own history and their own situation and I would never ask anyone why they would not want to have a biopsy, but I can tell you that I want to know exactly what my situation is and I want to know as soon as possible.  I think that the best years of my life are yet to come and they are worth some pain in the meantime.  I've enjoyed my romantic life and will even if the physical side of it isn't the same.  My biopsy had to be postponed, but I have one in another area coming up in the meantime.  Because I haven't had a biopsy yet and PC isn't exactly an area where I am an expert, I haven't been posting recently, but I just wanted to say hello as long as we seem to be in the same neighborhood.

Just posted this today.

Just finished reading this months AARP Bulletin.  There is a short article in it reporting John Hopkins has developed a new blood test for prostate cancer.  The new test reduces the amount of false positive biopsies.  According to the article biospies done due to the PSA blood test average 80% false positives.  The new blood test, EPSA-2, in testing had a 3% false positive rate.  EPSA-2 stands for Early Prostate Specitic Antigen - 2.  I wonder if that new test has been standardized in the medical community.  Those on this forum should pass this along to those that post here prior to having a biopsy.

Tamu

If you are waiting on a biopsy or have had one or more with false positives then you might want to query your urologist about this new blood test from John Hopkins.

hi gtmriviera..... we've definitely seem to be in the same boat for sure...... I was told my PSA was .01 extremely low, but the urologist does not like the feel of my prostate it should be more pliable, and said there is a 30% chance of prostate cancer ..... I will have the procedure done on the 18, ...so your biopsy has been delayed... I just recently had my thyroid removed about three months ago with a pre-cancerous tumor.... I was fortunate. And now this. Causeing me depression and feeling scared of losing my independence that bothers me more than anything, because I am alone........ I appreciate your response and we will chat together soon.

Tamu, thanks for mentioning the AARP bulletin.  The information about the new test looks promising and I would like to emphasize an important statistic.  80%--80%--80% of everyone who has a biopsy is cancer free.  I like the sound of that much better than "you have a 30% chance of having cancer".  I forgot that 80% of all statistics are made up.

Richard:

PSA of .01 - has anyone suggested you have another PSA and include a "free" PSA before having a biopsy????  Never heard of a PSA so low except after a treatment has been done, but I'm sure I haven't heard everything.

Also, if your PSA is that low and they find Pca I would think you would be in the very early stages and there are numerous treatments that will leave you with very few, if any, side effects.

Good luck to you.
