I have another question.  Mike has been having some leakage around his cath.  Tonight he said he kept feeling the urge to urinate.  He was laying down and had the same feeling and then it just started coming out around the cath for a few seconds and then stopped.  His bag is filling up and now everything seems to be fine.  Once again has anyone experienced this?  I am feeing a little overwhelmed, although otherwise he is doing fine.  Thanks again for all of your help.  pam Post edited to add title to thread Post Edited By Moderator (bluebird) : 10/15/2007 7:49:56 AM (GMT-6)

Pam,
The urge to urinate sounds like normal bladder spasms. I had them for a few days after surgery. The doctor can prescribe medication for it if it's really bothersome to Mike. I also had some leakage around the Catheter, nothing major just some occasional drips or small squirts, generally when I had the spasms. Occasionally they were stress related (standing up, stumbling, etc.). I think it's normal, but if you're really concerned, by all means call the doctor's office. Good Luck Pam, and don't feel overwhelmed - you are not alone! Make sure you take care of you, too!
Best,
Mike

Yes, the urge will be there for a while especially when the Cath comes out. I had some leakage too but not much and it did start to irritate the area where the cath entered the penis.

Ditto for me. A seemingly constant urge to go for the first few days, with leakage. All that seemed to resolve after the first week, but, like kdnole, the opening became irritated the longer the cath was in. Once it was out, all was well. We all know how you're feeling! Take one day at a time and try to find some quiet time just for you.

I had some leakage too, but it was when I was trying to have a BM and straining. I don't think it is that unusual. Take care.

My Angel was bright enough to buy me a pack of white "shop towels" that worked quite well for the leakage around my catheter. I simply wrapped one around and that allowed me to rest more comfortably.

I had bladder spasms also. I was put on Detrol to help with that. I also had leakage around the cathiter. But, mine leaked the entire time unless I kept it pulled tight. The DR. did not seem too concerned about the leaking.

hang in there
