I am 61 years old, 22 days post op from open radical retropubic prostatectomy. Kegeling and sleeping and eating and.....all that stuff and using 4-5 pads per day while trying to get to some level of urinary continence. I know this will take time and am certainly willing to work at it.

The irritation of urine on my scrotum is really unpleasant. I know I must not be the ONLY person who has been at this place. What did you do to relieve the irritation?

Thanks

The Boss [it's what my students call me!]

Hello Boss,

As you regain more control, and use fewer pads the irritation will improve as well. My personal journey to being dry took some 10 weeks. I found that changing the pads frequently, and a liberal application of good old fashion baby powder worked the best for me. Ointments, lotions, etc. will help initially to soothe the irritation, but baby powder will help with the moisture problem. Because you are already down to 4-5 pads you should be rid of the irritation soon.

Good luck to you, and a speedy recovery as well.

Glen

The Boss,

I used petroleum jelly for a barrier Cream during the day.
Over the entire area covered by the pads.
Powder works especially well at night if you are mostly continent while reclined.
As Glen said, nothing dries the area like powder!
Just regular baby powder works fine.
I often used an anti-fungal powder - in addition to using an anti-fungal cream once a week.
More if you are itching when dry.

There are the three top brands of anti-fungal creams & powders:
1. Tinactin: The active ingredient is Tolnafte
2. Lamasil: The active ingredient is Terbinafine
3. Lotramin: The active ingredient is Miconazole

You can find most in generic and I found Tinactin Generic worked best for me - both in powder and cream.

You will be better soon!

Boss,

I am 23 days post surgery and I have the same problem. I have constantly been using a cream I have tried cortizone 10, neosporin, desitin, A&D Diaper rash creme, and now Benadryl and it seems to work the best.

My daugher is a pharmacy tech and she has given me some wetness barrier they use in nursing homes to keep elderly from lying in urine or getting soaked with urine when wetting themselves. This stuff is called Thick Barrier Moisture Paste that is what the name of it is. It is made by Coloplast. It cost about 15 dollars a tube but it is a big tube. I have used it one day and it seems that the urine caused less irritation than before. I might be using too many creams and maybe I need to be using more powder and a hair dryer to keep thing dry more often. I think I am going to cut back on the creams and use the powder more. Gold Bond makes a good medicated powder and I have just purchased this and I am going to start using that as well.

The worst part of this whole thing to me has been the itching and the irritation of the scrotum.

If you find something that works good for you let me know I will try it also.

thanks to those of you who helped me with this issue.

Some remedies work some of the time. The coloplast barrier stuff also sounds promising.

Educator--Thje gold bond medicated powder really burned me! careful-- the irritation does get in the way---but keeping things open to the air is very helpful if you don't have to go out anywhere

After the da vinci prostatectomy my left side felt raw from all the urine soaking...so I got me a can of Gold Bond....laid on the bed and applied a nice layer of power. I thought my balls were on fire. I had to splash cold water on them for an hour.
