Hey Irishman - I recommend you ask questions similar to what you did for your surgery.  What happens?  What are the side effects?  How long does it take?  Will it cure me?  What are the odds?  Any pain involved?

Are you doing an IMRT?  I recommend that you accept nothing less.  Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy.  There is also a more advanced Image Guided IMRT, but it may, or may not be available where you live.

Most of us tolerate radiation well.  Some better than others, of course.  If you have questions, I'll be glad to respond.  My radiation was primary, so I have no knowledge about treatment after surgery.

Regards,

Bill

August of 2006, PSA up to 4.2 from 2.7 one year ago.
October free and total PSA 12% free and 5.0 total.
A month, or so later, 4.7.
Late in the year decide on Image Guided IMRT.
Begin 43 treatments on January 23, 2007 and finish on March 23.
Four month post treatment PSA is 1.9.
Seven month PSA is 0.8.

Irishman,
The top four treatments for RT are Tomotherapy, IGRT (Using IMRT), IMRT, and Proton therapy. Not in any particular order. IMRT when alone has the most side effects of the other three, but that stated I did IMRT and have no side effects. Painless and over before you know it.

Age 45 (44 when Dx)
Pre-op PSA was 19.8
Surgery on Feb 16, 2007
Post-Op Pathology was poor: Gleason 4+3=7, 4 positive margins, Stage pT3b (Stage III)
HT began in May, '07 with Lupron and Casodex 50mg
IMRT radiation for 38 Treatments ending August 3, '07

My PSA did drop out after surgery to undetectable.  It has not returned and I will continue HT until January '08.

My Life is supported very well by family and friends like you all.

Need to tank Bill and Tony againn and this is why.
Meet the radiologist this morning and he spoke about radiation treatment called 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, then I asked about IMRT (thanks guys) so we are now going for IMRT.
IMRT is covered by health insurance (VHI)if you have not had an operation (Prostatectomy) but if you had an op it costs appx €10,000 what a laugh.
The HSE (Irish healt board) in there wisdom say all I need is 4 Cilias tabs a mt Doc says 4 a week so I have to pay €150 per mt my self seems like when you are sick even with insurance they bleed you dry.
At the end of the day all we want is to get well.
Thanks againn for all the help, advise and for beeing there for me

Any info on what is to come welcome

hi irishman

i joined this site when my dad was diagnosed two years ago . i have not posted in a long time but i log on almost every week . my father had a psa of 12 and a half with a gleason 7 . he had the rp operation and when he went back for the results he was told his psa was 8 . his gleason score was 8 aggressive and his cancer was t2c . they said it is in both lobes but nowhere else that they could see . the doctor said their could be small cancer cells that have not shown up yet . he was put on hormone tablets for three months and then hormone injections for the rest of the year . he had 7 weeks of radiation in october this year . monday to friday . he was fine . he had no side effects except for tiredness in the last two weeks and for two weeks after treatment stopped . half way through the treatment they done a blood test . when i asked the doctor what the psa was he said it was not relevant at that time as he was still having treatment . they also told him he would be on hormone treatment for the rest of his days . that worries me as i keep thinking they know something we dont . he gets his results in january . fingers crossed . he was attending st lukes in rathgar and the staff are lovely plus we had a few laughs along the way .good luck with the treatment . we were very stressed in the beginning but now we take it in our stride . my dad is fantastic and never complains about anything . he has a great faith in god and takes it all in his stride .

Irishman,
Good news that you will be on the road to recovery. You are in my prayers. This board is fantastic, so much that even thousands of miles away we can share and learn from each other. If your insurance board will only allow 4 per month and you have to buy the rest, by the way that is not much different for me, then ask for the largest dose possible and buy a pill cutter. You'll get a reduction in the long run. I need 10mg per day. Si my script is for 20mg tablets. Cut them in half and I spend less.

Petal,
Welcome back. Glad you are watching this wonderful site. Stay well and your father too. And remember, you need regular testing.

Tony
