about 7 years ago I became very ill in my late 30's.  I had elevated liver enzymes, edema, was overweight, palpiations, and thought I was dying. The doctor did not test me at first for Celiac because I was overweight and didn't have diarrhea. However I had horrible heartburn.

Finally a holistic doctor had me tested and scoped and my vili were flat.

I began a gluten free diet about 7 years ago and today I am back to my normal weight. I went from a size 16 and now in size 4 pants. I feel like I have my life back.

My stomach is very sensitive even if when I don't have gluten, but digestive enzymes really helped, along with manuka honey.

Sometimes you just have to ask for it, but then you have the doctor asking you "Why you want it done?"

I had that from question from my son's doc when I told him "I wanted the Vit-D and Anemia (sp) and Vit-B's blood work done. I told him that I have the deficantcies and I don't want my son the have to go through it 10 years down the line or so when or if he started having some kind of problem. It's called preventative medicine doc. Do it."

Good for you Hara,

I was in my 40's and had a major medical emergency before I realized that doctors are practicing and sometimes you need to be insistent to have something fixed. If I hadn't been insistent that the pain I was suffering was real, I wouldn't be here today. I had seen at least 20 doctors over a 16 year span. The last doctor I saw was dedicated and dug deeper, and discovered what the 16 years of pain was from. It turned out I had an absess growing from a surgical procedure done 16 years before in my abdomen. The surgical doctor said it was a good thing I had it done the day I had it done. He told me one more day, and it probably would have burst and I would have had numerous complications. The absess was ecoli, the doctor said probably from a surgical instrument because of the location of the absess. My daughter is having some medical issues and the symptoms can be celiac disease and although I have been diagnosed with Celiac disease, her doctor (she is in the USAF) has refused to check her for Celiac and has labeled her as IBS. She has now gone on a gluten free diet and has relief from most of her symptoms.
