I usually post on the UC site since my daughter was diagnosed with UC a year ago. Upon diagnosis she was tested for Celiac and it was negative. She has been gluten free pretty much since diagnosis and it didn't seem to make a difference to her UC symptoms at all. We have tried MANY dietary modifications and recently decided to "give up" (she still has a very healthy diet) but reintroduced bread as a "treat". Her new GI wanted to recheck her celiac status and so ran an ELISA transgutiminase IGG test. The top of the range was 20 and her level was 26. I don't know how definitive this test is or what this means - is it high enough for a diagnosis of celiac disease or possibly a "leaky gut" sensitivity due to her UC and her body reacting to gluten. Very confusing - any help very much appreciated.
Thanks!
PS, sorry I forgot the add that her IGA levels were low (less than five out of 16 I believe)?

The gold standard for diagnosing Celiac is a positive biopsy from her small intestine. However, some doctors are comfortable recommending a gluten-free diet based solely on blood test results. One thing that you may want to try is a test from http://www.EnteroLab.com (I have no financial connection with this website/company).

Also, my own experience suggests that other food intolerances or allergies or sensitivities may co-exist with Celiac or Gluten Sensitivity, so other allergy tests may also be of interest. More labs are now offering IgG allergy tests in addition to the standard IgE allergy tests, because sometimes the reaction to an allergy is delayed (meaning it is an IgG allergy/sensitivity instead of an IgE allergy).

Take care,
