Have had a history over the past 6 months of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, seizures, and 40 lb weight loss, etc.

Had an EGD and a colonoscopy 10 days ago. Doc took many biopsies. Colonoscopy was normal. My entire esophagus, stomach, and small intestine (as far as he could see) were red and inflamed. I had narrowing of my esophagus which he dilated.

Got the results from my biopsies today. Positive for Celiac disease. Doc sent me to get blood drawn today to be sure.

Now for my question: have any of you with Celiac disease had inflammation of the esophagus and stomach? A positive ANA? Could this be Crohns instead?

I've been searching on the internet, but everything seems to talk about the small bowel.

Thx!

Yes, most MD's believe Celiac is confined to the upper small bowel...I don't happen to agree because I've seen research suggesting some cases can have inflammation elsewhere in the gut in addition to just the upper small intestine.

Make sure the doctor/pathologist re-stains the biopsies to look for Eosinophils. Flattened Villi are not only seen with Celiac but also with Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders (EGID's). Narrowing of the esophagus and inflammation such as you describe can occur more likely with EGID's than with Celiac. For more info on EGID's, see http://www.apfed.org/

Yes, it is possible to have a positive ANA with Celiac, but not from Celiac itself but rather because autoimmune (AI) diseases tend to occur in multiples in the same individual...i.e., having one AI disease seems to increase the chances of getting another...

Inflammation such as you describe is also possible with food allergies. Have you had any allergy testing for foods?
