Hi, im new here.  I started seeing an oncologist/hematologist last November for very high white blood cell counts that have gone from 13,000 to 19,000 from 2005 - 2011 and continue to climb.  The doctor has ruled out leukemia and ovarian cancer, but has not ruled out anything else yet. I have extremely low iron so he put me on monthly IV iron transfusions beginning in December 2010.  He says my stomach and intestines are not absorbing any iron from any of the food I eat and it would be a wasted effort to take iron pills however he does not know why my body isnt absorbing iron from the foods I eat.

I was dx with IBS in 1999.  I notice that about 2 weeks after my iron transfusions I begin to get very weak and tired and my joints hurt especially in my feet and hands.  Also I have lower back pain constantly.

Then, when I get my next iron treatment I feel full of energy again for about another 2 weeks and am pain free.

If anyone can give some advice plz help all is appreciated.  as this hematologist/oncologist has yet to find out my diagnosis.

Have you had a bone marrow biopsy?

Has anyone checked your Vitamin B12 or Folic Acid levels?

Do you know if you are making enough stomach acid?

Have you been tested for Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity?

Have you been tested for other food allergies/intolerances?

All of these things impact iron absorption/utilization, or could shed some light on the high WBC.

Have you been tested for parasites through Genova diagnostics lab (they're one of the better parasite testing labs)?

Also, there may be an infection at the root of your problem - the body will sometimes sequester iron (i.e., remove iron from blood circulation) when there is an infection present because iron sometimes feeds the organism that is causing the infection. And sometimes there can be an infectious component to various types of cancers (usually fungal or viral).

It might be interesting to see what a Naturopathic physician would say about your situation, also.
