Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here.  I have frequented the Ulcerative Colitis board since 2006.  However, after reading the wonderful book, "Wheat Belly," I went gluten free, and have had a MAJOR improvement in the past probably 3 weeks with both bowel related stuff, and a lot of upper back/neck joint pain I was having.

I do have a question though...for some reason in the last few nights while in bed I've had some shooting pain from my buttock/hip area slightly down my leg.  This caused me difficulty sleeping last night.  In looking on the web it sounds perhaps like sciatica.  However, I NEVER had lower back pain before going gluten free!  This is SO weird - I only would get upper back/neck joint problems, which disappeared very quickly after I started eating gluten free.

I am wondering if I was accidentally "glutened" despite my best efforts or what, as I found some posts on the internet from people claiming there sciatica came when they were glutened.  The crazy thing is, I had to call in sick and miss an ergonomic evaluation that I scheduled due to my prior upper back/neck problems...talk about Murphy's law.

I have also been suffering from a bad case of the "million wipers" after some bowel movements, and even sometimes in the AM after a shower.  I used to get this really bad after eating, but it has gotten better since going gluten free.  I wonder if this new lower back issue/gluten intolerance are related to perhaps neurological function of the sphincter also?

Can anyone advise me?  I have an excellent chiropractor if needed.

Sciatic nerve problems are pretty common and I think you'd have a hard time connecting this to a single time of mistakenly eating gluten. If you do a web search for piriformis syndrome you will find a bunch of really great stretches that will help relieve a likely muscle spasm deep in your glutes that is squeezing the sciatic nerve.

Thanks kazbern! I have started to think that perhaps it is due to my posture at work putting pressure on that area. I'll tell you though that gluten is a monster!

New to forum- gluten- free for 2 months however I have cheated a few times only to have IBS and other problems the next day. No one else in my life eats this way so it's sometimes hard to be so strict- the benefits do seem to outweigh the cravings though!
