Hi, I am new to the new forum and looking for someone who is well seasoned in this topic to help me interpret my labs. I fear my doctor will shrug off my new lab results as nothing important. I had the antigliadin IgA antibody, Antigliadin IgG, Antiendomysial IgA antibody, Tissue transglutaminase (TTG) antibodies tests done and the only one that came back postive was the  antogliadin IgG. I have had a biopsy and was not found to have celiacs in 2008 and discarded the thought of my health ailments being associated with gluten intolerance or celiacs disease but now that I have had that test done and no other test is coming back postive, I am starting to wonder again.

My question is, do you guys think that I can have gluten sensitivity with the IgG antigliadin being the only blood test to come back positive? It came back weak positive also. The reference range was up to 19 and mine was 24. If not I can live with that, I just need some input. I am a realist and don't want to be barking up the wrong tree, but it seems like my issues seem to point gluten sensitivity.

I have also had my ANA, Rheumatoid factor, cortisol among many many others checked and all comes back negative.

I have had a host of symptoms. My worst is my eyes being papilledema and photosensitivity and photophobia. I also get sick with certain foods, and feel nauseated with them. My doctor also suspects MS, but all MRIs come back normal so the next step is a spinal tap. I have had sinusitis that is very very bad and nothing helps. Anyways enough of my rambling. If anyone can help me interpret my results I would appreciate it very very much.

Or Has anyone had an experience with having a positive antigliadin IgG and other negative results and still decided to go gluten free and had relief from their symptoms? Thanks.

I think it's advisable to try a gluten free diet and see what happens. It's a 2-3 week commitment. I had a full celiac panel done 5 years ago and biopsies of the duodenum and was told I did not have celiac disease, but when I went gluten free 18 months ago the benefits were absolutely clear.

There is no downside to trying a gluten free diet.

Jen, it sounds like in your case, that you may have gluten sensitivity. And even small amounts of gluten may cause severe reactions, according to my ND. I did multiple types of testing for gluten sensitivity and celiac and all came back negative, except for my saliva test, which indicated 15 out of 30 (a positive for gluten intolerance).

I would advise you to try out the GF diet for a bit, and that includes eliminating ALL things gluten.

So cosmetics, soy sauce and oatmeal, all of which contain gluten (without mentioning it). Good luck to you.

I started going GF in may, and have had great success with it.

I also had negative Celiac Panel and biopsies, but positive anti-Gliadin IgG on blood tests. Was not sure what that meant, but the doctors shrugged it off as nothing.

But further research led me to get tested through EnteroLab.com (I have no financial connections with EnteroLab or Dr. Fine). This test came back positive for HLA-DQ2, one of the primary Celiac genes, and also showed high fecal fat (malabsorption) and elevated fecal Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase IgA. Interpretation was Gluten Sensitivity.

I tried a 6 month gluten-free diet as a result of the EnteroLab tests, and then ate something with gluten in it (a communion wafer).

That was all the proof I needed that gluten was a huge issue for my body. The symptoms were immediate and long-lasting...took 6 weeks for them to subside.

I have not ingested gluten on purpose since then. Unfortunately, I have become sensitive even to airborne gluten, so must avoid bakeries, grocery store bread & flour aisles, restaurants, and people's houses in which gluten-containing foods (especially gravy, pasta, fried breaded foods (e.g., fried chicken), and recipes containing flour) have been cooked within the past 48 hours.

So yes, it is possible to have very little test evidence of gluten problems, and yet actually be very sensitive to gluten.

what do you mean by this: "except for my saliva test, which indicated 15 out of 30 (a positive for gluten intolerance)"? when we all got saliva tested, the doctor said it was either negative or positive. our scores were:

husband 18 (borderline 13-15 positive >15)
me 12 (and that's with me being almost totally gf for 3 years! and having only a slice of pizza, a 1/2 bagel, and 3 pieces of general tso's chicken the 2 weeks before the test!)
son 8

what do you think? thanks!

It is without a doubt amazing how little gluten/wheat it takes our bodies to react to and apparently the longer we are Free the less it takes and worse/longer the symptoms and recovery time. Yes I know most of us and out Dr.'s would like to have the idea test! in hand, but unfortunately the reality is Most Celiac's are dx by history and symptoms, the best way to go about this is to keep a food journal(I read this in several someone else's posts)for as long as it takes to complete the diet/test. Start with deleting All gluten, wheat and dairy(that's just to keep any confusion about symptoms out)after 30 days start adding back in dairy then wheat then gluten in whatever order and keep a record of every symptom, how severe, how long etc. That should answer the question for you and your Dr. you can find more details about this here in the postings and at celiacdisease.com a wealth of info there. I hope you are doing well and i don't sound too preachy shocked I'm just passing on what was shown to me. Let us know how its going.
