I am a newly diagnosed celiac and have a question? I am on week 5 of the gluten free diet and the first 5 days were worse than ever. then all of the sudden felt great for 3 weeks now I still feel better than I did but have some diarrhea coming back. Is this common in the healing process and how long does it take for my stomach to completely heal?

The stomach lining takes 6-8 weeks to heal, but this is after the 6-8 weeks it takes for the gluten to leave the tissues.

And some find they are still improving 1-3 years later...

Your symptom flare may be due to unintended gluten exposure (suspect cross-contamination or unlabeled gluten).

I am also newly diagnosed celiac (3 months ago), and have occassional bouts of D.

Have been told by other celiacs and a dietician that healing of the intestine can take between 6 to 12 months or more, depending on the individual. Many of us also have additional food allergies which result in a lot of ups and downs along the way while we figure out what we can tolerate.

What I hear on other online support groups from fellow travellers with CD is: it's a bumpy road, but if we stay completely GF we should gradually make progress.

Join as many support groups as you can. Folks with CD are a wealth of information, and are happy to share their experience, give tios, and answer questions from newcomers like us.
