I was informed a year ago after surgery that my thyroid was low.  I have gained a lot of weight over the past 2 years and I figured this was the reason.  But recently (this week) I am trying to wean myself off Zoloft for various reasons.  Upon reading up on Zoloft I found that taking it causes weight gain.  I can’t help but wonder if this has contributed to my weight gain as well.   I have a few questions if anyone can help me please reply:   What can I do to lose the excess weight faster?   Will I have this Disorder forever?   Is there a connection between not losing weight on Synthroid and Zoloft?

Actually correctly (and this is very important) medicating your thyriod condition should help with weight loss, if it was the reason you gained the weight. I think figuring out what exactly caused your weight gain is a very good idea. Being depressed which is quite normal with any chronic illness and can cause weight gain, zoloft can cause weight gain, thyriod problems can cause weight gain.

You asked what you can do to lose excess weight? In my experience really it comes down to exercise and being correctly medicated. Plus it helps with the depression. (Portion control helps too.)

I do not know what caused your thyriod disorder, so I do not know if you will have it forever. Remember they can be triggered by something as "simple" as a pregnancy.

Thank you, I have spoken with my Family Doctor and my OBGYN but they both believe the Zoloft can't cause weight gain. Recently I have have learned that not to be true. I am just up in arms about the weight gain (75lbs). I have tried everything but cant seem to lose it.

Sometimes thyroid tests are not accurate in telling if a person needs meds or not. One's readings can be fine but one might need meds. It won't be easy but try to find a doctor who will treat symptoms rather than numbers on a test. There are many people who are on meds for hypo that show tests that their thyroid levels are "normal".

I gained alot of weight last year because my dose of Armour was kept too low for too long. Even on 1200 calories I gained weight. Now that my dose is raised (3 times the amount I was taking for 2 1/2 years) I am finally losing weight and feeling so much better. My heart no longer pounds and I don't get palpitations. My hair is no longer falling out, muscle and joint pains are much much better and even gone most of the time. Many other symptoms have gone that I have had to live with for years. It seems that even endocrinologists are not always aware of when and how to treat let alone primary care docs..

It took me a long time and a ton of research to get where I am now. Not one of my doctors knew why I was gaining so much weight and having so many symptoms --because my levels were supposedly fine. Well my levels might have been fine but I wasn't.......Again I owe my healing to a computer not a doctor. We need to be our own advocates in our health care or we are in for years of misery.

Blessings

Weight gain, antidepressants and thyroid. What an awful combination. I've had such a problem with weight gain and not being able to loose weight even when my TSH was 0.18 indicating I was hyperthyroid. I still couldn't loose much weight! So, they said I was on too much medication, lowered my dose and I have gained about 5 more pounds even with colitis. I take cymbalta. It is hard for me to say what my problem is because all this started to happen together along with menopause. I am trying to increase my activity even more, so we'll see if that helps. I hope others have better luck with this than I do. I'll keep checking in to see if anyone has the answer for us. I am hoping greater intensity exercise will help me.

i had my endocrinologist increase my meds. a little, even though my tests said i was normal. ive also had some other med changes so its hard to say whats really happening and why, but i have lost about 15 pounds in the last 3 or4 weeks! yea! however, because i had gained so much over the past couple of years, i still have a long way to go. maybe if you do get a change in meds. you will lose weight, too. i hope so. i know how it feels to suddenly have to deal with a weight problem on top of everything else. by the way i am hypothyroid. good luck to you and as others said, you have to do research and become your own advocate.
