Hi everyone,

I am seeing my surgeon on Friday to schedule my thyroidectomy and was wondering if any of you have had your thyroid removed?  I'm nervous about this procedure but I'm having so many problems from my thyroid that I can't stand it!

Hi Minicooper,

I had half of my thyroid removed this past February. I ended up going back again in April to have the other half removed due the findings of a small cancerous nodule from my first surgery. I had two thyroid surgeries back to back with no problems. Right now I am trying to get my thyroid meds adjusted. Overall I feel really good!

Thanks for the reply, I think that the dr is only going to take the left side and biopsy a few lump nodes that have been swollen for the past few months.

Me too hoping all goes well. I may be facing the same thing myself and would be interested in your input.

From what I have been reading from posters it is not a difficult thing to go through.
I wish you the best and a quick recovery.

I had 1/2 my Thyroid removed in FEb 09. I was very nervous, but my doc was so positive it was the right thing to do because of ThYroid Cancer in my family.

I had no postoperative problems at all. I could talk  and was not terribly sore or hoarse. My doc said my paparthyroid glands were "right there" where he could see them  and not damaged at all.

I was better than ever the first 3 months post op.

The I slowly  developed symptoms of thyroid disease. I have a cyst remaining on the other side that is stable for now, but may be contributing to the hypo. My doc tested me and said we are starting meds NOW.

I think you should totally relax about the surgery. If  1/2 is removed you may be fine with one side working. But if not, they can put you on meds. It is easily fixed.

It is not always the right thing to leave a large nodule in. Mine was causing coughing and Choking! Inexplicably, my allergies are almost gone now that the growth is gone.

Thanks everyone!! I saw the surgeon on Friday and I'm scheduled for a total thyroid removal on Wednesday, providing I'm not coming down with a cold. I'll keep you posted.

Well, I had my total thyroidectomy on Wednesday August 26th and I already feel better than I did before the surgery.  I have some swelling and minor bruising but the scar isn't going to be too bad.  My endo started me on 50mcg of Synthyroid but called today asking me to come in on Thursday because of the some of the test results she has back.  The dark circles that I've had under my eyes for years are gone and the whites of my eyes are brighter than they've been in months.  I'll keep you posted!

If anyone is interested I started a blog about my thyroid surgery and what life is going to be like living without a thyroid.

Hi Minicooper!
Thank you for your posts! I am finally going to go in & see my doc about my thyroid. I've already been dxed with Hashi's & my doc spoke of dissolving some of my thyroid if it gave me much trouble. I'm not real sure what he meant exactly, but have come to grips that I must get something done about it. This board has already helped to ease some of my anxiety.

I had my thyroid out 21 years ago when they found cancer on thyroid and take the synthroid daily. Haven't had thyroid problems since but do watch the immune system and take care of it.
