What ARE the less obvious symptoms of a thyroid problem??

I was surprised to read in a couple of these posts of the mention of tingling in the extremeties (feet, hands, etc.)

I've had MINOR swallowing problems, mostly w/liquids. I have to sip, I tend to swallow too much air when I take a "normal" drink.

I do have to drink quite a bit of something COLD (has to be cold) w/my meals to help food slide down the esophagus rather than "stop and rest" in 2-3 areas of the esophagus.

I've been having some VERY MINOR swelling of the lower legs and ankles.

My rings are either too loose or too tight, only occasinally fitting "right".

Virtually no hair in the arm pits, pubic area or on the legs.

I'm almost always cold. Yet I suffer heat intolerance - and humidity intolerance as well.

Many times after a full meal I get CHILLED, BADLY chilled. Bone chilling chilled. I have to sip hot drinks, hold hot drinks in my hand, don fleece PJs and climb in bed under blankets and a down sleeping bag.

Even just minor pressure on my neck, especially the front, makes me feel light headed and tingling like some of my blood flow has been cut off.

Lately there is the almost constant feeling of a ball of phlegm in my throat. Even tho the neck of all my turtlenecks are loose fitting I can't stand any type of collar any where near the front center of my neck.

For the first time in my life - at 67 - am putting on weight, FLAB, ALL IN THE GUT area. 21 lbs in 12 months. My normal weight since 13 has been 110-115 lbs. I have Crohn's disease so I've been down to as low as 89-90 lbs. I've been on TPN via PICC line to gain weight and the gain has always been evenly distributed, NEVER, flab in the gut area. There is (so far) no accountable reason for this weight gain NOR its distribution.

Crohinetoo, I like your signature tag. :)
There is so many different symptoms for the Thyroid problems.
I get hot very quickly, too. My feet and hands stay cold a lot. I'm a leg sweller who can't lose weight no matter how I starve myself. My body temperture averages 97.2. I'm sick if I hit 98.6. I'm moody and feel tense all of the time.

You sound like you've got a thyroid problem. Have you had any blood work?

My "normal" temp is 96.6 to 97.4. I had to take it the exact same times 3 x a day for a week w/a mercury thermometer for some "naturalist doctor" I went to once. (Broke 4 thermometers whislt shaking them down because I can't hold on to them well).

I think we've run thyroid blood draws twice, maybe 3 times, and they've always been "normal".

But NOW I shall go back and take a closer look at them. I raised and showed dogs for some 30 years and I learned then to take a CLOSE look at the results in relation to the Reference Ranges. Sometimes borderline high or low "normal" were worth investigating more closely. The GOOD veterinarians seemed to trust the symptoms a bit more than the borderline "normal" test results. I thought I had learned that lesson as it relates to my blood tests too .... but obviously not.

Thanks for that reminder. I'm figuring out the symptoms I've had in relation to thyroid problems "after the fact" since I certainly didn't recognize them before hand. My family doctor once or twice must have had an inkling since he ordered those T3, T4, TSH tests.

I'm rather enamoured of your signature tag too! It fits me rather well!

I'm considered subclinical hypothyroidism. For years I kept saying things were "strange" and I felt "off" to my doctor. He basically ignored me. Then this past March my legs started swelling up. He just gave me lasix no blood work. After a month of swelling, I finally went to another doctor who ran the blood tests needed. He found the hypothyroidism and doubled my lasix and potassium.
I'm still a grump, but I feel better.

Joy, are you not on any thyroid replacement? Synthroid, levothyroxine or similar? I'm wondering why not, if you're hypothyroid?

That thyroid blood draw the same day as the soft tissue CT of the neck was all normal.

T3 Total was 173 w/a Reference Range of 60-181
T4 Free was 1.0 w/a Reference Range of 0.8-1.8
TSH was 0.96 w/a Reference Range of 0.35-5.50

So the T3 Total was on the higher side of "normal"
The T4 Free was on the lower side of "normal"
The TSH was on the lower side of "normal"

I'll have to check out that ratio of T3 Total and TSH - and see if I can remember when we ever checked these values and then if I can find those result. Altho two blood draws hardly can be relied on to detect any "trend".

I'm on 75mg of Synthriod daily now.
They were having me take 100mg, but discovered I was too low and was becoming hyperthyroid.
I was feeling pretty good then, but for some "blue" waves. Since they lowered it no more blues.
I'm still moody at times. Short tempered....My niece keeps telling me to "keep my panties out of a wad". :)
