I have hypothyroid for over 15 years now. Over the past two years, they've had a hard time getting mine regulated. At 112 mcg. I am hyperthyroid and then at the lower dose 110 mcg, I am too low. A mixture of the two alternating days, I am still too low. Any idea what this is????? Right now I am back on the 112 but I think I am hyper b/c I am having anxiety and hot flashes. I think I need to see an endocrinologist. I wonder if any of my other meds are causing the problem b/c I am on a lot.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I pulled out my "thyroid for dummies" book to look up interactions. Here's what they list:

lithium (eskalith, lithium carbonate, lithobid)
ethionamide (Trecator-sc), fluorine (like in our city water!), aminoglutethimide, ketoconazole (Nizoral), para-aminosalicylic acid (Paser granules), sulfonamide drugs (sulfadiazine, sulfasoxazole, acetazoleamide) (bactrim, septra), certain sulfonylureas (tolbutamide, chlorpropamide), thionamide drugs (including propylthiouricil, methimazole, carbimazole)
isoflavins (found in soybeans)
thiocyanate (found in brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, rutabaga, and turnips. If cattle eats this and you drink their milk it can affect you too.)
estrogens, clofibrate, Perphe****ne (prochlorperazine, trifluoperazine, chlorpromazine, estrafon, trifon), anabolic steriods, androgens
Glucocorticoids (Celestone, decadron, depo-medrol, hydrocortone, solu-medrol powder)
Nicotinic acid, heroin and methadone, amiodarone
aluminum hydroxide(amphogel, maalox, mylanta, alu-cap)
carbamazepine, diphenylhydantoin, cholestyramine, colestipol, ferrous sulfate (iron)
phenobarbital, rifampin (rifadin, Rifater), sucralfate (carafate)
aspirin (8-10 per day)(Darvon, Ecotrin, Excedrin, Fiorinal halprin, norgesic, percodan, robaxisal, soma, fiortal, gelpirin, propoxyphene, roxiprin)
bromergocryptine (parlodel, bromocryptine Mesylate)
clofibrate, dopamine, octreotide, opiates
pamidronate (aredia), phentolamine, pyridoxine (B6), avandia, actos, glyset, prandin, starlix
furosemide (lasix, furosemide)
adderall
reglan, metoclopramide, tagamet, cimetidine, zantac, ranitidine, nexium
haldol

these can cause false positives:
salicylates, diphenylhydantoin, carbamazepine, furosemide, heparin, orphenadrine

These can cause hyperthyroidism:
amphetamine, cimetidine, ranitidine, clomiphene, l-dopa inhibitors, metoclopramide, domperidone, iodine, lithium

Foods to avoid:
soybeans, broccoli, cauliflower (Brassica Group of veggies), bamboo shoots, sweet potatoes, corn, lima beans. Also brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, rutabaga, and turnips.

I found this is reflective of my nutritional issues.

Google Hashimotos. That's what I have and my thyroid readings are never consistant. Quite difficult. I'm in the middle of giving herbal suppliments as a replacement. I've tried different thyroid medicines and have had a heck of a time.

The thyroid is one thing that is extremely difficult to interpret. I NEVER feel good due to hyperparathyroidism. Taking calcium/Vitamin D supplements, but still don't feel like a normal person should. I also am going to the gym, walking, etc, and still don't function right. I am TIRED ALL THE TIME..and taking 100 mg. of thyroid meds. dr said they can regulate it, but it sure doesn't seem like it is doing the trick. TIRED, TIRED, TIRED...want to sleep all the time, and Dr says I am ok. GO FIGURE...unreal.

Have you been checked for sleep apnea? Many people with thyroid issues suffer from sleep apnea, too.
I was exhausted all the time. I was told I stopped breathing every two minutes during my sleep. The doctor told me this was equivalent to me waking up every two minutes and running up two flights of stairs.
Do you snore? Do you have a thick neck? Do you wake up a lot during the night? Do you fall asleep very easy when you get still and quiet.

Yea, been checked for sleep apnea and don't have it-:) I've had a host of other medical problems lately and wonder if it is just how my thryoid acts. I am going to ask them about the armour thyroid. A lot of people seem to do better on that.

Well, I think the colitis makes it bounce around a bit. After my recent surgery, I was almost hyperthyroid. It's crazy. But now, all the colitis seems to be gone so it remains to be seen how long I will be in remission and if I will stay there. The docs and pathology don't think it is crohn's colitis. I have my doubts because of the joint pain and positive blood test. So, it's a bit iffy. I am going to enjoy the remission while I have it.
