Has anyone had headaches from taking Cytomel?  I am on 75 mcg Synthroid but I keep gaining weight (25 over past 7 years)...Doctor is adding 5 mcg of Cytomel a.m. and another 5 mcg at noon with lunch.  I took them for 3 days and suffered with a horrible headache so I stopped taking it.  Has anyone experienced headaches and if so, did they eventually go away?  The doctor suggested I just take 5 mcg in the morning and forget the p.m. dose but I'm afraid to try due to the intense headaches.  BTW - the thyroid meds are not for my weight.  I do have low thyroid.  I think my metabolism is jacked.

one of the signs of an overdose of cytomel is headache.

Headache, irritability, nervousness, sweating, arrhythmia (including tachycardia), increased bowel motility and menstrual irregularities are signs of overdose.

Cytomel (liothyronine sodium) Tablets are intended for oral administration; once-a-day dosage is recommended. Although liothyronine sodium has a rapid cutoff, its metabolic effects persist for a few days following discontinuance.

When switching a patient to Cytomel (liothyronine sodium) Tablets from thyroid, L-thyroxine or thyroglobulin, discontinue the other medication, initiate Cytomel at a low dosage, and increase gradually according to the patient's response. When selecting a starting dosage, bear in mind that this drug has a rapid onset of action, and that residual effects of the other thyroid preparation may persist for the first several weeks of therapy.

I don't know if this helps or not....

I used to be on strictly Cytomel several years ago and it was 25 mcg and it didn't bother me at all (to the best of my memory).  It didn't make any difference in the way I felt so we discontinued it.  Apparently, the doc thinks I need T-4 and T-3 combo.  I was taking both Synthroid and Cytomel so maybe that gave me the headache.  I also experienced horrible anger problems, irritability big time, and sweating.  It did last several days after discontinuation.

I still think it's my metabolism or something to do with the pituitary.  I exercise, eat right, do everything right but still gain weight.  It's very depressing! mad

It is. I don't eat that much, but it clings to me and brings friends. :(

I've discovered this old post in my search for info on people's experience with liothyronine.

I'm wondering lovetoread, if you got this resolved???

I've been on t3 in addition to synthroid for 6 weeks now. Had been on synthroid since 1992 and did well on that. Had a reverse t3 done recently and new MD put me on t3.

I get headaches from lyme disease, but they've intensified since starting t3. Also feel very wired and aware of heart pounding.

I talked to MDs nurse on Monday and they never called back. Makes me mad.

I stopped for 5 days while on vacation because it was ruining it and felt better after two days. Have to see her on Tuesday, so got back on full dose of 5 mcg.

I suppose people don't hang around this board once their problem is resolved like they do on some of the chronic disease boards, but hope you or someone else can tell me that this goes away after the body gets used to it.

Can't sleep. Never tired, except for yesterday after I had gone through two days before of being really stressed out over something. Today, am wired again. I actually enjoyed the sleepy feeling I had yesterday!

Not sleeping is a lyme thing, but didn't used to wake up after 2 hours.
