Has anyone on this forum had their thyroid gland removed?  I am very scared and concerned because when I went to doc yesterday they felf my thyroid glan enlarged.  I am waiting for blood test results and possible ultrasound.  My neck hurts a lot and radiates to my left ear.  I guess what I am afraid of is that it has to be removed and I gain lots of weight.  Can anyone give me any input. Thank you.

I've hadn't had mine removed, but I've heard that you won't gain weight if they get your levels right with meds.

That is a relief to hear. The is my biggest scare. I have always struggled with an eating disorder so weight has been a main focus for me. I am really scared. Thank you. I guess I should not worry until I get more details and my lab results back. I haven't heard from the physician yet. I just had them done. Maybe next week.

Removal or ablation of the thyroid will not make you lose weight. The thyroid hormone is necessary for life, for many things more vital than weight, even, and it will be replaced by taking one pill a day.

I had Graves disease and an enlarged thyroid which was treated by radiation 15 years ago. In essence, I have no thyroid left. I haven't had any trouble with gaining weight because of it.
