I know I posted this up on the other post about a week ago but I have been diagnosed with severe anxiety for the last year and a half.  I'm 25 and I find it really hard to believe its just anxiety causing me to be a complete mess.  As I also said in the other post that my mother has bad thyroid issues but she says that she never thought she felt any symptoms, she just foundout when her results came back.

So this post is just pretty straight to the point, for the most part.

Is it common for people with thyroid problems to be misdiagnosed with just anxiety/depression for awhile?  It's been a year and a half and it's been pretty rough for me and I don't really feel better.  I still can't sleep for my life....and at times the nervousness and shaking are unbearable. Not to mention the always so fun memory problems.

It's posssible. My sister-in-law has issues with both. When her thyroid is messing up her nerves get really bad.

Hi. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid this past March. It seems the older I get the more I worry about my health but it really has gone up to the next level of worrying since I was diagnosed with my thyroid. This summer I was diagnosed with GAD, generalized anxiety disorder. I CANNOT BELIEVE I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THIS.....what a coincidence! I finally started taking medication for my anxiety last week and I feel so much better! I'm not worrying....I really feel like my old self. It is just so weird that my anxiety level went nuts after being told about my thyroid. Also, my Vitamin D is low...24....so I am taking 5,000 units a day for a month and will be retested. I really think this thyroid stuff really effects everything in you. I don't think my doctor really thinks it's all related .... I'm going to an endocrinolist next year to see what he says. Anyway, it's quite interesting. Good luck to you.

The thing about thyroid issues is it's an autoimmune illness. Your body is attacking itself. When your body is at war you never know what kind of casuilty will pop up.
Since my thyroid problem was diagnosed I've suffered from the following problems:
leg edema
arthritis (in several joints)
Sleep apnea
pre-diabetes
forgetfulness

I have been on the same dose of a thyroid med for 25+ years (since my thyroid was removed due to hyperthyroidism).I am now 61 & recently began suffering from wierd muscle pains so my GP feels it is Fibromyalgia. He has put me on (30mg )Amitrytalin (Elavil) since I had bad side effects with Paxil & Celexa in the past. I am wondering as well if there is a connection between
the thyroid issue and this new Fibro problem. I haven't seen an endochronologist since my surgery. My GP does a yearly Thyroid test and always says it "normal". Should I seek out the advice of a specialist
or just trust my GP ?

It wouldn't hurt to see a specialist just to make sure there's no changes happening.
