Hello, my Dr has arranged for me to have this blood test done, I forgot to ask whether or not I should fast before having it...apparently it's more likely to show a positive result if done after fasting?

I've also heard that it's better to have it done first thing in the morning, when TSH levels are at its highest, is this the best time to have it? If I'm honest, I kind of want it to be a positive result...my main problem is my digestive issues, I'm really wanting and hoping that if I get treated for a thyroid problem, my digestive issues will calm down, but I could just be hanging onto false hope ;) I just want something to fix me for good.

Thanks for any help!

You are right you should fast before the blood test.
Not sure about the time of day.
Good Luck on your test.

I did mine first thing in the morning because I am diabetic. After the test, they fed me juice and graham crackers and told me to eat without checking my bloodsugar. I didn't think of checking it, but I figured out later I was dangerously low. Right after the test, I went to a Christmas party (Just had mine last month) and at the Christmas party I did everything a diabetic should not have done. I ate a plate of food (mashed potatoes, ham, some veggie, roll). Had a cookie, brownie, and piece of pie. And to top that off an apple cider. Here's the funny thing... on the way home (an hour after eating) I feel weird and get out my bloodtest kit and test myself... I was 77. How in the world could I eat ALL of that and be 77... I should of been sky high. So with my brains of medical training, I stopped and ate (AGAIN lolol). And by the time I got home (2 hours driving) I was low again!  So I ate once again. So here's a massive hint... if you are diabetic and doing this test... PACK FOOD, SUGAR DRINKS. And also do yourself a favor, Pack yourself a few books, yarn to knit/crochet, your laptop, etc. This test only takes 4 hours.

4 hours for a blood test?! That can't be right surely...:S

Although I am sorry to hear of your frightening experience.

I am not diabetic though, although I do have to limit my sugar intake anyway. But thanks for the advice.

When they did mine, it went from 8am to 12pm. Bloodwork every 30 minutes. Thankfully I have a picc line so I never felt a stick or a poke. She told me she usuually will put in an iv in patients so she doesn't poke them over and over. You can ask the others here, how long their test lasted. My test, could have been longer because I also am a chemotherapy patient. So they may have ordered extra tests. But I do know I spent 4 hours in the room getting tested every 30 minutes. Did everyone else do 4 hours or did I get special tests cuz of chemotherapy?

When I had my test they had me do mine fasting. I was tested at 8 AM that morning, told to go home and eat something, and then come back exactly 4 hours later, and get tested again.

Hmmmm...interesting! I didn't get told anything particular with mine, just that it's a blood test, I guess I'll ask when I ring up. I'm gonna fast anyway if it's more likely I get a positive result I think, regardless of what they say! :P

I haven't got round to ringing up yet to book my test! :S

I just thought as well actually, can I take prescription medication before this blood test or do I need to be free from medication? Does anyone know? Maybe I need to get my doctor to ring me and ask him that too...argh.

Ask the doctor. I took my asthma spray beforehand.

I was told I couldnt take anything, including my asthma inhaler. So I brought my portable nebulizer with me in case anything went wrong. Couch is right though, ask your doctor. From the sounds of it there is different sets of rules for everyone.

Apparently I can take my medication beforehand, although I'm off domperidone at the moment. My blood test is booked for 10:10am on friday, eek!!

Weird question, but with me having digestive problems, is it worth me making myself more sick and upsetting my stomach, will that make it more likely for me to have a positive result on the test? I just want to make sure it's as accurate as possible...

Why is it that you want a positive result so badly?

I'm hoping treatment for thyroid problems will improve my symptoms and I'm fed up of having gone 18 months without a diagnosis.
