I am hypo. My problem is WALKING. I feel like I will fall. Cannot go up or down any steps - not even one. Am on 50mcg of Synthroid but feel it is not working for me. Doctor says my blood readings are fine. If they are, WHY CAN'T I WALK???? I also have NO BALANCE! Sometimes it feels like my legs just do not want to do what I want them to do. Am not on any other medicine for any other problem. I just want to be able to do something except sit at home!!

Hello and welcome to healing well.

I am hypo as well and am on 200mcg of synthroid. But, I am on a high dose because I had thyroid cancer and they treat high to low rather than low to high. I started on this dose back in may or june and still am at that level.

Is your doctor a regular gp or an endocrinologist. If regular gp then I would make an appointment soon with an endo. they are more specialized in thyroid disorders.

Also, another thought. I had a lot of trouble with balance, especially on stairs. I was fatigued beyond anyones imagination. The problem - iron deficiency. Have you had a complete blood work panel done?? there are several things that could have that same symptom - low b-12, iron, vita D or even an issue with your ears.

I know this post is over a week old, sorry, but please, if you have found some answers let me know. this forum isnt very active but I will check back to hopefully hear from you.

take care,

B12 is O.K. now but was quite low. Not sure about iron. Rest of metabolic panel is O.K. so I am told. Ears are fine - no inner ear problem. MRI of spine and brain are O.K. Am to have an EMG test in January. Still have ALL symptoms before I went on Synthroid. I just feel it does not work for me. This inability to walk is VERY FRIGHTENING!! I am to see a new Endro in January also. Just wondered if anyone else has/had this problem and it did end up being a Thyroid problem.  I NEED HELP!!

I am so sorry that you are suffering. I am also sorry that I cannot add anything new to my suggestions. Maybe it is the synthroid, maybe your dose isn't high enough or maybe its the wrong med for you. unfortunately only the doctor can tell.

I am on 200mcg and am still hypothyroid. But I feel much better and have more energy since my b-12 and iron levels have finally leveled out.

Did they give you b-12 shots or put you on high doses of b-12?? Do you know what your numbers were??

I took B12 shots. My B12 got up to 1000 so my doctor quit giving them to me. Even that did NOT help my walking problem. Maybe the new Endro can help when I see him/her in January.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Have not heard from ANYONE about a walking problem. Just wish I could get some enlightment in that area.

So sorry that no one has answered. This forum is not as active as some of the others and/or no one has any experience with those type symptoms.

Have you tried posting on the chronic pain forum or even the lupus or fibro? Many people that do not have a concrete diagnosis visit those, no one will turn you away. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Maybe there are some other symptoms that go along with your very weak legs that will help someone there come up with some helpful ideas?? (shhhew that was a long sentence)

I hope your appointment goes well and hope that you will come back here to let me know.
