I came across this article, funny thing I've never been told to limit my intake of Broccoli or Cauliflower?

http://thyroid.about.com/od/symptomsrisks/a/All-about-Goitrogens-thyroid.htm?nl=1

" ...

If you still have a thyroid, however, you should be careful not to overconsume large quantities of goitrogens. This does not mean you need to avoid your favorite foods however. The enzymes involved in the formation of goitrogenic materials in plants can be partially destroyed by steaming or cooking.

If you are a heavy consumer of cooked goitrogens and have a difficult time balancing your thyroid treatment, however, you may consider cutting back on the amount of goitrogenic foods in your diet..."

Anyone know about this?

I've never heard that, but then my thyroid has been ablated so it wouldn't have any effect on me. I've limited my intake of cruciferous veggies because of my UC, however.

Hi InSoFla,

We had a discussion about this a while back:

It's interesting how many people are unaware of this.

I was concerned about that because I eat an awful lot of broccoli and kale. I even grow my own broccoli sprouts which have a lot more sulforaphane than an equivalent amount of mature broccoli (PNAS, vol. 94, Sept. 1997). I have a large shake with these vegetables
(and other healthy things) for breakfast and dinner. My TSH recently was 24.2 ulU/ml with Reference Range 0.450 - 4.5. My doctor said that it would still take a lot more cruciferous vegetables to have any affect on my thyroid. It turned out it was due to a medication I was taking - Seroquel. They don't even say it on most web pages that provide info about Seroquel but it is on the FDA site that Seroquel can cause abnormal thyroid levels. I think I would look into any medications or supplements you're taking first. IMHO.
