I'm a 21-year-old female who's had tons of symptoms for the past three months and never suspected a thyroid issue until recently. I went to a health clinic a couple days ago and saw a nurse practitioner who decided to take some blood and check for thyroid issues. I've read that the results can come back normal even if you do have a problem, so regardless of what the tests say I'm going to look more into it and maybe talk more about it with my regular doctor. However, I'm very anxious about the test results so I'll post my symptoms here to see what you guys think.

-I've had morning sickness similar to a pregnant woman off and on. (I AM NOT PREGNANT!) Usually a couple hours before I normally wake up I'll get woken up by a stomach ache. Sometimes I vomit, sometimes I don't. I was vomiting every day but it's rare now. For about a week now I actually haven't been nauseous at all in the mornings. I still can't eat much when I first wake up and I used to have no problem eating first thing in the morning.
-Constant lightheaded/dizzy feeling, usually if I'm doing anything besides laying in bed. Sometimes I have spells where I actually feel like I'm going to faint.
-Lightheadedness if I haven't eaten, and then again after I eat.
-Heart palpitations
-Hair loss and dandruff. I've always lost a decent amount of hair every time I shower but now it's noticeably thinner. My scalp is also very flaky and nothing seems to help.
-Fluctuations in appetite. Sometimes I'll have no appetite and other days I'll want to eat everything in sight. This is making me think it's some kind of hormonal thing going on.
-Occasional slight numbness/weakness in the left side of my body
-More visible veins all over my body, which lead me to believe that my skin might be thinner
-Slight vertical ridges on fingernails... I normally wouldn't think anything of this or even notice but I read it could be a sign of thyroid disease.
-Increased anxiety. I've always had anxiety but it seems worse now... maybe just because I'm stressed out about my health.

Right before all these symptoms started I had a flu-like illness that lasted about a week with low grade fever, body aches, and nausea but I'm not sure if it's related to the other stuff that's been going on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

While the symptoms of thyroid disorders can be pretty non-specific, these don't sound like typical symptons of either hypo or hyperthyroidism. I do hope you'll continue to work with your doctor to find an answer, and soon be feeling better.

That sounds more like EBV-Epstein Barr Virus, its caused by the virus that causes mono, mine isn't that bad but I'm already on meds for other stuff. The hair thing is what would worry the most, I've had 2 brain tumors and radiation and never lost my hair(no chemo turn )I would still try an Endocronologist, they deal with everything having to with your thyroid, your metabolism, Crohn's, addison's all that. Good Luck-Keep the Faith.

Thanks for the replies. I actually read about a correlation between thyroid issues and morning sickness in pregnant women so I thought that might be what was going on with me. I also always thought hair loss and palpitations were major symptoms of thyroid problems but I guess not. Still waiting for the phone call about my blood work... they checked for thyroid problems, mono, and lyme disease so hopefully something will come back.

So, from what I've been reading I think I might have a painless thyroid inflammation triggered by the virus I had in April. Apparently it has both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid phases and lasts about six months. This would be my best guess as to what's going on.

Well, just got my bloodwork results back and my thyroid function is normal. The main thing they found that could explain my symptoms is that I have had EBV. I guess my viral illness at the end of April could have been mono and I didn't know it. I just don't think that could cause periods of lightheadedness, nausea, palpitations, etc. three months later!

I also had slightly high calcium and I read that pretty much the only cause is a problem in the parathyroid glands so I might get that checked out.

I've had all those symptoms and then some for going on 6 months now, my PCP says EBV can last up to 4 months so that pushes me right into CFS

Thanks. Can I still have symptoms even though it isn't active (my white blood cell count isn't high)?
The high calcium and high platelet thing is worrying me because I've been reading about multiple myeloma and I have some symptoms. It's one of the few things besides hyperparathyroidism that can cause high calcium. I have these red spots on my body (mainly my chest, upper arms, and scalp and that can indicate some type of malignancy.

Hi Lindsay,

What did your doctor say about the high calcium and high platelets? And you are right, thyroid
problems can cause hair loss and heart palpitations. Have you talked to your doctor about
a referral to a endocrinologist or an internist? It sounds like you really do need some answers
to what is going on. Do you know if they checked your fasting glucose? They probably did
but I would ask just in case. I know when I was suffering from hypoglycemia I had the nausea,
palpitations, tremors, shakiness, etc. You might ask your doctor if you could be suffering from
hypoglycemia.

Did you tell the doctor about the weakness/numbness on the left side of your body. I don't
know if any of this is related to the EBV but I would definitely keep asking questions until
someone figures out what is going on. Let us know what you find out.
