So I know I just posted a thread in this forum a couple of days ago but since then my bloodwork results came back. I was positive for EBV (which may explain some symptoms I've had for a few months and a viral illness I had at the end of April), I had slightly high platelets, slightly high calcium, and slightly high albumin. Thyroid function was normal.
I looked up the causes for high calcium and the only thing I found (besides cancers that would cause a low white blood cell count and low platelets, neither of which I had) was a parathyroid disorder. Has anyone had this problem and what was your experience like?

Something else I'm wondering... do high levels of albumin increase your calcium levels very much? Because I just remembered they said my albumin was slightly high so that could've been the reason. And I guess that and high platelets can both be caused by dehydration... didn't think I was dehydrated but it's possible.

Hi Lindsay,

You are asking some reallly difficult questions. Did your doctor offer any explanation about the
high calcium, high albumin, and high platelets? Did he say if it was related to the EBV? I really
wish I could help you, but I don't know anything about those things. We don't normally
get those questions on the thyroid forum.

I would definitely ask your doctor for an explanation and if you aren't satisfied with the
treatment, I would ask for a referral to a specialist, possibly an endocrinologist. I hope
you find some answers soon.

hi i had a parathyroid gland removed in january of this year. i cant remember how it came about that it got tested as i first saw a surgeon about it about 5 years ago. my mum also had a parathyroid removed although its not necessarily hereditary. i was told that when one of the glands is enlarged it produces calcium overload and if left untreated can build up calcium deposits in the arteries and cause osteoporosis. i also read that it can have an effect on blood pressure, anxiety symptoms, depression etc all of which i have. after the surgery i havent noticed any significant changes in myself except that my feet dont hurt quite as much as they previously did. by that i mean i was in agony after being on my feet for any length of time , similar i think to plantar fasciitis? anyhow if i can offer any help dont hesitate to contact me.

Hi Lindsay,

I had a parathyroid gland removed in 2006 after the calcium levels were detected to be quite high. One thing about this as well, I was told, that if this is ignored it could lead to the shut down of the kidneys. After hearing this, I could not hurry the surgeon fast enough to operate. So far, so good, I am checked every six months and my levels are normal, but what a surgery! Seven hours! Yikes! I do not sing high soprano any more, and my cat is very grateful.... :)

I have MEN1 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1), it runs in my family, my fathers side, supposedly his father before him. I was diagnosed after a DNA test for it in 2007. Thus far, the only obvious issue I've had has been associated with hyperparathyroidism, high calcium levels which one of the results was multiple kidney stones.
I had one enlarged parathyroid taken out July 2010, still had high calcium levels, so was referred to Dr. Yeh at UCLA in Aug 2011 for a parathyroidectomy and left forearm auto transplantation. Basically, they take out all remaining parathyroids (in my case three) pick out the best one, cut it in half, and one half is cut into four pieces, attached to a small piece of titanium and implanted into my forearm.
Was taking calcium carbonate (Tums) until the parathyroid implant took hold and started working again, about three weeks.
The reason for the auto transplant in the forearm, if it were to enlarge again, it's easier, and safer, to have surgery on the arm than on the neck and the complications that can arise from that type of surgery.

Thanks for the replies.
I'd just like to update and say I had my parathyroid hormone level checked and it was normal. So I guess the calcium is either an error or I just have a high/normal level. The good thing is it's stayed about the same as far as I know, and doctors don't act concerned about it.
