New to Healing Well, my name is Michelle living in Los Angeles.

I have hypo-thyroid and currently taking synthroid 50mg. I'm now in menupause and gaining weight.
Used to be 135lbs now 190lbs. In addition, I have bipolar disorder.

Need advice why I'm gaining weight? Is their a doctor who helps people with my conditions that offer
a comprehensive approach to menupause and hypo-thyroid.

Would like referrals for endocrinologist/menupause doctor in Los Angeles, Ca.

Thank you.

Michelle, hypothyroidism can cause weight gain, but usually not as much as 55 pounds. The hormonal changes of menopause likely share the blame, and remember that drugs you are prescribed for your mental health issue can often cause weight gain too.

I can only suggest really watching your diet and getting regular exercise. If you're not taking lithium, limiting salt intake can help. DO NOT do this if you're on lithium, as it tends to deplete sodium from your body.

Any competent endocrinologist should be able to address both the thyroid and menopause issues. Perhaps another member who lives in your area will have specific suggestions for doctors for you.
