I need some help.  I was in the Army as a Communications Specialist.  I worked daily in a facility that emitted low level radiation from 1972 until 1987.  In 1984 I was diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid and went on levothyroxine.  The nodules on my thyroid have grown quite large (approximately 10 inches total) and now I have a hard time swallowing.  It feels like I have a golf ball in my throat.  I went and seen a doctor had all the tests completed to include the aspiration biopsy.  I now have an appointment on 2 January 2014 to meet with a surgeion for removal of the thyroid.  I want to know if the constant exposure to low level radiation from the Microwave, High Frequency, VHF and UHF and crypto that emitted radiation could have caused this problem.  Thank you.

I do know the thyroid is very sensitive to radiation, so I think it's possible if you had constant long-term exposure. Home appliances these days are pretty well shielded, but the army uses some equipment that's quite different from home appliances.

You could be eligible for VA care if you want to pursue that.

Hi,
I don't know the answer to your question, but I would like to shed some light on what you will need after the surgery.
First thing is that being on Levo should shrink your nodules, if it didn't then you were not balanced properly.
After the removal of your thyroid, it should be sent to lab to test for Cancer, if that is the case, and I hope it is not, then your dose of levo should be such that your TSH becomes suppressed, and you should be given RAI to kill any thyroid tissue remains.o
If you don't have cancer, then you will need to be on levo for the rest of your life, be ware that just taking levo is not enough, you need to get your TSH to optimal level for you, you might want to see an endo to adjust the dose for you.

I am being seen at the VA.  I have been on levothyroxine since 1984 when first diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid in the army.  I got the results back from the biopsy and was told that there is no cancer present from the specimens.  I guess my biggest fear is the surgery itself.  I have a heart condition and I am a diabetic and I take a long time to heal.  Thanks for the information.

Sorry I don't have anything useful to say, but wish you well.

However, your query has me wondering about X-rays in general. Should the thyroid area always be covered up during an X-ray?

I just had quite a few X-rays on my abdomen and back and they never covered my throat at all. After the last X-ray I had I noticed the apron and throat covers hanging up but they were not offered to me.

All the best x
