Hi

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 24 years ago. It was a year after the birth of my daughter. I have been on levothyroxine ever since.
Is it too late to find out what kind of hypothyroid it is. Hashimoto was never mentioned because as far as I know no antibody test was done.
Does it make a difference this time in my life? I am 52 years old. I have no problems from my thyroid but have been diagnosed with other problems. I have no autoimmune diseases at the present time.

If your symptoms are well controlled there may be no medical reason to pursue a more definitive diagnosis, but if you want to know, the full thyroid panel should still give you your answers. That would be TSH, free T4 & T3 plus antibody tests. Easy enough for your PCP to order these, and if you have insurance they should be covered.
