I had a thyroid test 2 months ago and the result was under-active but it was not very high. I repeated the test a couple of weeks ago and also tested for antibodies. The thyroid test was normal but had a positive result for antibodies 150. I have been having all symptoms that would suggest hashimoto. Very low energy, high blood pressure readings but normal again, brittle hair, menstrual changes from a regular 28 days now 21 days and last 7 days and very heavy, forgetting what I was going to say during conversations, weight gain, ache and pains and low frolic acid.

I went to see my GP and she said that because my blood was normal and the high reading wasn't that high, despite the positive reading for antibodies, that I would not be treated. She did take more blood to test for the menopause, celiac, diabetics etc.

Just wondering can you have thyroid symptoms with just a positive antibodies and a normal thyroid reading.

Thanks

There is a thread a few down with someone with similar symptoms.

https://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=37&m=3132024

My free T3 and free T4 are within normal range. TSH is a bit high, but still normal. TPOab still high at 85.

I would recommend you see an endocrinologist, though from personal experience I am not optimistic that much can be done. I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that they are just going to let the antibodies attack the thyroid and then replace the T4 with Synthroid. I am currently taking 75mcg, but I could go up to 88 if if my TSH is still high (over 4) in 4 months.

It is frustrating to have these symptoms and feeling hopeless about treatment. My weight gain, fatigue and sleeping too much are not in my head. They are real symptoms.

Selenium is supposed to help. I started taking 200mcg between the time my first blood test was taken (went from 50mcg to 75mcg) and the time the second (about a week and a half ago) was taken. My TPOab did drop from 105 to 85, but I cannot say for sure that it was the selenium.

It is good to hear that your doctor is testing for other autoimmune disorders, though.

I recently bought a book called "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause." It was written by a pharmacist who herself was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and her journey on seeking treatment for herself. It is a pretty thick book with a lot of small print. Kind of a daunting task to read it, but it did get good reviews on Amazon.
